At least 8 killed in Texas school shooting; suspect apprehended

There have been multiple fatalities at the shooting at Santa Fe High School, two law enforcement sources told CNN, citing preliminary information.

 

Multiple people were also injured in the shooting. According to reports, at least 8 people have been killed. It is possible there is more. The exact number of the dead and injured are still not known. The scene is still being processed and cleared, the sources said.

 

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed on Twitter that the shooter is now in custody. He said it is no longer an active situation, but added there are multiple casualties.

 

 

US president Donald Trump took to Twitter to give an update on the shooting.

He wrote: “School shooting in Texas. Early reports not looking good. God bless all!”

 

 

A Facebook post by the Santa Fe School District states that “the situation is active, but has been contained.” It adds that “there have been confirmed injuries.”

The post reads: “This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The situation is active, but has been contained. There have been confirmed injuries. Details will be released as we receive updated information. Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location. All other campuses are operating under their regular schedules….The district will continue to keep you updated as information is available. Safety and communication are our top priorities.”

 

 

Narrating what happened at the school, MaKenna Evans, a 16-year-old sophomore at Santa Fe High School, told CNN she was in geometry class when the shooting started. She said she first heard the fire alarm. Then when the students got outside, her principal told them all to run.

Evans said students hid behind a building across the street from the school. Her aunt called and told her there was a shooting. (Her aunt’s husband is a police officer and he’d told her what had happened.) Evans’ brother picked her up, and she is now safe at home.

‘Oprah Winfrey smokes weed’ – Her longtime best friend, Gayle King reveals

Oprah Winfrey, who’s admired as one of the respected and richest women in the world is a ‘marijuana smoker’, according to her best friend and CBS News anchor Gayle King.

Gayle was featured on the Ellen Degeneres Show recently and she revealed that the media mogul does weed.

The News anchor was discussing marijuana with comedian Amy Schumer during the show when she made the statement. She said she has never used cannabis, but couldn’t say the same about her BFF.

“Oprah has also smoked a little marijuana, too. I don’t mind saying that,” King said. “I’m not telling tales out of school.”

When DeGeneres asked if Winfrey “likes” getting high, King declined giving more information by saying: “I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate her,” King said when pressed for details. “It’s not something that happens on a regular — I’m going to change the subject.”

The CBS News anchor also went on to reveal that she’s interested in trying marijuana for the first time.

“I’ve gone all this time without smoking…am I missing something?” she asks. “I prefer to be high on life. I’m so glad to be on the planet doing the jobs that we do.”

Over 100 people killed as Cuban Boeing 737 carrying 113 passengers and crew explodes moments after taking off from Havana airport

Today, a Boeing 737 plane crashed moments after taking off from Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport, killing over 100 of its 113 passengers and crew barely 24 hours after more than a third of its fleet were grounded over safety concerns.

 

Cuba’s newly sworn in president Miguel Diaz-Canel confirmed there was a ‘high number of casualties’ after the internal Cubana de Aviacion flight crashed into a yuca field near a high school, in the Santiago de las Vegas neighborhood, on Friday.  Just three survivors have been recovered so far – all in critical condition, according to Cuban media.

 

Photos of the scene show fire crews attempting to put out the still smoking wreckage of the aircraft which was devastated in the crash. Debris was left scattered across the surrounding area after the explosion.

Hospitals in the capital, including the General Calixto García University Hospital, are bracing themselves for the arrival of the survivors, Cuban state media Granma reports. Flight DMJ 0972, which was headed for the city of Holguin, in eastern Cuba, was carrying 104 passengers and nine crew when it crashed at 12.08pm local time.

 

The cause of the crash is not clear but witnesses at the airport terminal reported seeing a huge fireball followed by a giant plume of smoke rising in the distance. Diaz-Canel arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. ‘The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims,’ he told AFP.

Cuba’s national airline, Cubana de Aviacion, has been plagued with safety issues in recent years due to its aging fleet and only yesterday, more than a third of its fleet were officially grounded. The company which has a fleet of 16 with an average age of almost ten years old received an order from the Cuban National Aviation Authority to ground its six An-158 aircraft due to ‘serious’ technical and safety issues including cracks and mechanical issues, according to Airline Geeks.

Gombe State Police command arrest fake currency syndicate with N22m fake notes

The Gombe State Command of the Nigerian Police Force has discovered fake notes totalling the sum of N22 million during a ‘stop and search’ operation around Billiri local government area of the state.

 

While reacting to the allegation against them, one of the suspects, Sani Ibrahim, confessed that he became a dealer of fake naira notes to meet his basic needs due to the economic condition of the country.

 

He said, “It is not my wish to produce fake Naira notes. It was one Alhaji who brought me into this line of illegal business last year when the economy became tough for me and I approached him for assistance”.

 

He further confessed that “We operate in Gombe and Nasarawa states because that is where we have people who trade in our fake currency”.

“Trump twice asked me the difference between HIV and HPV,” Bill Gates dishes on his meeting with Trump

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has spoken about his meeting with Donald Trump and he revealed quite a lot; including that Trump twice asked him the difference between HIV and HPV and knew a “scary” amount about Gates’s daughter’s looks.

Gates made the revelation at a recent Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation meeting, where Gates took questions from staff, according to MSNBC’s All in with Chris Hayes show, which broadcast the footage on Thursday.

Gates told the audience how Trump had met his daughter Jennifer, now 22, at a horse show in Florida.

Gates adds:

And then about 20 minutes later he flew in on a helicopter to the same place. So clearly he had been driven away but he wanted to make a grand entrance in a helicopter.

Gates himself met Trump for the first time in New York in December 2016, he recalled:

So when I first talked to him it was actually kind of scary how much he knew about my daughter’s appearance. Melinda [Gates’s wife] didn’t like that too well.

They met again in March last year at the White House.

Gates continued:

In both of those two meetings, he asked me if vaccines weren’t a bad thing because he was considering a commission to look into ill-effects of vaccines and somebody – I think it was Robert Kennedy Jr – was advising him that vaccines were causing bad things. And I said no, that’s a dead end, that would be a bad thing, don’t do that.

Both times he wanted to know if there was a difference between HIV and HPV so I was able to explain that those are rarely confused with each other.

Gates made his audience laugh when he recounted one particular incident from his meeting with Trump

Gates said:

When I walked in, his first sentence kind of threw me off. He said: ‘Trump hears that you don’t like what Trump is doing.’ And I thought, ‘Wow, but you’re Trump.’ I didn’t know the third-party form was always expected. ‘Gates says that Gates knows that you’re not doing things right.’

Following Gates revelation, Tara Dowdell, Democratic strategist, told MSNBC host Chris Hayes:

We’re looking at a president that doesn’t know the difference between HIV and HPV but he has memorised Bill Gates’ daughter’s appearance.

So if he spent more time actually learning policy, if he devoted just a quarter of the time that he devotes to harassing women and gawking at women to actual policy, memorising and learning policy, I think the country would be a lot better off.

New York lawyer who slammed employees for speaking Spanish kicked out from office space and is now facing a complaint

Aaron Schlossberg, the lawyer who was filmed ranting in a restaurant and threatening to call Immigration officers on two female employees because they spoke Spanish (read here), has been kicked out from office space his law practice was in. He has also had a complaint filed against him with a disciplinary committee that oversees lawyers in the state.

Aaron’s brief rant was captured on video and it went viral. In it, he was telling the women that his country feeds and accommodates them, therefore the least they can do is speak English. He then threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement to have the workers “kicked out of my country.”

After the video went viral, he was thrown out of the office building where he practiced as a lawyer.

Aaron’s former office building management said:

“We have terminated his services agreement with us, his actions are just not consistent with our community and rules and regulations … It’s totally contrary to everything we believe in as a company and personally.”

Along with getting kicked out of his office building, Aaron’s online reviews have fallen, meaning, he might find it hard getting a job as a lawyer.

In addition, the viral video prompted two elected officials to send a letter to the disciplinary committee on Thursday. U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. wrote to New York state’s court system, which has a grievance committee for attorney complaints. It is unclear what action the disciplinary committee could take, if any.

Moreso, Aaron can no longer walk the streets of New York in peace. Paparazzi have been following him around, harassing him, and he has been filmed multiple times running from them.

Kings of Lyon: Atletico Madrid beat Marseille in Europa League final

Atletico Madrid have won UEFA’s Europa League for the third time in eight years, comfortably beating Olympique Marseille 3-0 in Lyon.

Marseille came into the match desperate to end French football’s 25-year trophy drought on the European stage, Intertoto Cups notwithstanding. Ultimately it was the Spanish side’s experience and technical quality in such arenas that won them the cup. For the Spaniards it is a virtuous circle, for the French it is a vicious one.

Where Marseille were profligate, Atletico were ruthless. Where Marseille were naive, Atletico were streetwise. Where Marseille’s bench was light on world class, Atletico’s boasted World Cup winners.

Marseille knew they would not have too many goal-scoring chances against the best defence in La Liga. After four minutes they had already wasted a good one. Valere Germain blazed over when he should have least hit the target after Dimitri Payet put him through. For the first 15 minutes Marseille were the better side; they enjoyed more possession than their opponents and won more 50-50 challenges. Their supporters also outnumbered the Madrileños and encouraged them noisily forward. But they found no breakthrough.

On 21 minutes Marseille’s goalkeeper Steve Mandanda overhit a pass to his defender Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa. The risk a goalkeeper takes in passing through the middle and along the ground quickly became all too apparent: Atletico captain Gabi stole the ball and played it forward to Griezmann, who had plenty of time and space to slot past Mandanda. One chance was all Atletico needed.

It quickly got much worse for OM. With just over half an hour played, Marseille’s captain and creative engine Dimitri Payet limped off injured. Psychologically it was a harder blow for Marseille than the goal had been and although Payet was replaced, by Maxime Lopez, he proved irreplaceable. From then on, it seemed like Marseille were playing with a man fewer.

They made it to half time without further damage to the scoreline but four minutes after the break Griezmann pounced again, chipping Mandanda after being played in by a surging Koke. Two chances, Two nil.

Marseille didn’t give up, but their long balls lofted into the box from wide or from deep were dealt with comfortably by Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak and his defence, marshalled by Diego Godin. The entrance of Kostas Mitroglou in place of Valere Germain after 74 minutes did provide Marseille with a different attacking outlet and almost a goal, had Mitroglou’s glancing header gone in off the post rather than to safety.

By then there was an air of inevitability about the outcome. Atletico were in control and put matters beyond all doubt in the 89th minute. Griezmann started the move when he played in Costa, who found Saul, who in turn gave it to captain Gabi, lurking in space on the right of the penalty area. Gabi fired it home, making the victory an emphatic one. Atletico showed La Liga still rules the Europa League. Marseille, while valiant, lacked the killer instinct and showed why Ligue Un is not quite there yet.

N20 Billion debt: AMCON takes over Stella Oduah’s assets

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has taken over Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Ltd. and other assets belonging to Senator Stella Oduah over an unpaid debt of about N20 billion.

 

AMCON said the takeover followed an injunction granted by Justice M.S. Hassan of the Federal High Court, Lagos against Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Ltd. The corporation in a statement by its Head, Corporate Communications, Jude Nwauzor on Friday said that Oduah-Ogiemwonyi had been having a running battle with AMCON over her inability to settle her huge debt of nearly N20 billion.

 

The statement said that AMCON purchased the Eligible Bank Assets (EBAs) of Sea Petroleum & Gas from Union Bank Plc. sometime in 2012. It said that in spite of overtures and genuine efforts made by AMCON to reach an amicable settlement, the senator and her co-promoters had remained recalcitrant. “Having exhausted all avenues of peaceful resolution of the humongous debt, AMCON had no other choice than to refer the matter to court,” the statement said.

 

It said that the order also affected the senator’s other business interests for which AMCON had since appointed Moyosore Jubril Onigbanjo (SAN) as receiver over the assets of Oduah-Ogiemwonyi; Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas; Sea Petroleum and Gas FZE as well as Star Tourism and Hotels Ltd. The statement said that the court also ordered the freezing of the funds of Sea Petroleum & Gas and its affiliated companies and principal promoters, held anywhere by any entity or persons in Nigeria. It also authorised AMCON and its receiver, Onigbanjo to take over all assets pledged as collateral for the facility by Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Ltd.

 

“In compliance with the order of the court, AMCON through its receiver, Moyosore Jubril Onigbanjo, SAN, today (May 18), simultaneously took possession of the assets of Sea Petroleum & Gas Ltd. and its affiliated companies. Justice Hassan specifically, ordered Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Ltd. and its affiliated companies to hand over the company’s business, which sits on over 9000 square kilometres of land in the fastest developing area of Lagos State along the Lekki-Epe Expressway,” it said.

 

Other affected assets, according to AMCON, are two tank farms of 500 metric tonnes capacity; a property at Maiyegun Tourism Zone, Lekki Peninsula Scheme 11, Lagos Island and a filling station complex at kilometre 14, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ikota, Lagos.

 

The court order also listed a host of other assets across the country, including Plot 2, Block 12C, Babafemi Osapa Crescent Lekki; Block 5, House 4A Mobolaji Johnson Estate, Lekki, and office/filling station at Jakande in Lekki, Lagos, among others.

Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal discharged from UK hospital after poisoning

Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal has been discharged from hospital two months after being poisoned with a nerve agent in Salisbury, England.

The 66-year-old and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia Skripal, were found slumped on a park bench in the city on 4 March. They were taken to Salisbury District Hospital’s intensive care unit, where they were stabilized after being exposed to Novichok.

 

Yulia Skripal was discharged from the hospital on 9 April and was moved to a secure location. It is not known whether Sergei Skripal has been taken to the same location as his daughter.

Director of nursing Lorna Wilkinson said treating the Skripals had been “a huge and unprecedented challenge”.

She added: “This is an important stage in his recovery, which will now take place away from the hospital.”

FBI’s Most Wanted Nigerian Fraudster Tobechi Onwuhara Arrested in Australia

A Nigerian born sophisticated con artist, Tobechi Onwuhara, who fled Florida in August 2008 amid an intense FBI investigation, has been caught in Sydney, Australia and sent back to the U.S. to face a string of fraud charges.

He was on the FBI’s most wanted list for several years for his alleged involvement in an elaborate scheme that defrauded the financial industry out of tens of millions of dollars.

According to a report published by CNN in 2011 while he was on the run, he was a criminal genius:

In America he became one of the world’s most successful cyberscammers, a criminal genius who used his talents to filet a poorly regulated banking and credit system. In less than three years Onwuhara stole a confirmed $44 million, according to the FBI, which believes the total may be anywhere from $80 million to $100 million. All he needed was an Internet connection and a cellphone.

Onwuhara called it “washing.” He’d set up a boiler room in a fancy hotel (the Waldorf-Astoria was another favorite) to wash information on wealthy victims. Then he’d wash bank accounts. One group in his crew would do online research using databases and websites to harvest names, dates of birth, and mortgage information. They’d build profiles of victims for a second group, who would call banks posing as account holders. The callers cadged security information and passwords. Then Onwuhara would breach the accounts and wire funds from them to a network of money mules he had established in Asia. The money would be laundered and wired back to his accounts in the U.S.

However, The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Onwuhara, 33, has been arrested “in response to a request from the United States Government”

The FBI’s website now lists Onwuhara as captured, but with scant detail of the arrest. They were offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

He was described as “a key member of a group of Nigerians who allegedly have been conducting fraudulent banking activities from Florida and Texas, since 2005. It is alleged that the group has been using online Internet databases to steal victims’ identities. Once acquired, they allegedly use the victims’ information to gain access to the victims’ Home Equity Line of Credit accounts and wire transfer the money to accounts mainly located overseas, some in the United States.”

EFCC parades 18 Suspected Internet Fraudsters caught in Ajah & Lekki

The Economic & Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed the arrest of 14 suspected internet fraudsters in the Badore area of Ajah, Lagos State, today.

According to the commission, the suspects were arrested yesterday by the Lagos Zonal office acting on intelligence report.

Items recovered by the EFCC include exotic cars, laptops and various charms.

The names of the suspects are; Abiola Kayode, Adeleye Adewale, Adeniyi Abiola, Favour Iruabo, Iyiola Olayemi, Lawal Remilekun, Martins Adetunji, Obafunsho Oladipupo Samson, Olaleye Bamilola Hassan, Oseni Ridwan, Peter Ayobami Samuel, Peter Toluwabori, Prince Jibril Dirisu and Richard Jerry John.

According to the commission, the suspects will soon be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

The commission also revealed the arrest of four other suspects caught in the Lekki area of Lagos on Saturday, 7th of April.

The suspects are Ale Daniel, Tunde Badmus, Adams Tunde Adedeji andAjiboye Gbenga. The 4 were arrested in the Lekki area of Lagos State for various offences bordering on cyber crimes and money laundering.

According to the commission, their arrest followed intelligence report received by the Commission about their activities, alleging that they were living flamboyantly without known sources of income. Items recovered from them include exotic cars and charms.

Speaking on the renewed clampdown on Internet fraudsters, the Lagos Zonal Head of the Commission, Akanninyene Ezima, said:

“It is to checkmate the activities of these undisciplined elements who want to reap where they did not sow. “By this action, we are also sending a red alert to the so-called yahoo-yahoo boys that engaging in fraudulent deeds, does not pay.” He also urged landlords, particularly in gated communities, to always carry out background checks on their tenants so as not to unwittingly run foul of Section 3 (Three) of the Advance Fee #Fraud  and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, which says; “A person who, being the occupier or is concerned in the management of any premises, causes or knowingly permits the premises to be used for any purpose which constitutes an offence under this Act commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of not more than 15 years and not less than five years without the option of a fine.”

LASTMA to divert Traffic in Ikeja ahead of APC’s Lagos State Convention on Saturday

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced its intentions to divert traffic ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) state convention.

A section of Acme Road in Ikeja will be closed, the body has announced, with the traffic to be diverted to other routes.

The diversion will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2018.
