Government gets $1b debt offer from Afreximbank

Denies targeting manufacturers in new fiscal regime
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has reiterated its cooperation with Nigeria in its quest for development, as well as willingness to arrange financing of up to $1 billion to support the government’s investments in trade enabling infrastructure.

The bank also invited President Muhammadu Buhari and the government to the Afreximbank’s yearly meetings scheduled to take place in Abuja from July 11 to 14, as well as the Intra-African Trade Fair in Cairo slated for December 11 to 17, in efforts to promote trade among African countries.

In the yet to be signed 2018 national budget, there is a planned N1.95 trillion deficit, which would be funded by the usual mix of local and international debt.

However, with rising oil prices in the international market, increased oil benchmark and the current huge debt overhang at more than N20 trillion, this year’s debt consideration is sure to raise more argument despite its merit.

Already, the bank has approved financing up to $17 billion for Nigerian entities between its commencement of operations in 1994 and December 2017, Afreximbank President, Dr. Benedict Oramah, disclosed.

Oramah, who had last week, led a delegation of the pan-African multilateral lender to Abuja said that the bank’s facilities had made major impact on critical sectors of the Nigerian economy, while the institution now has loans outstanding of about $3.5 billion in the country as at 31 December 2017.

He identified the sectors benefiting from the bank’s facilities to include financial institutions, transport, hospitality, manufacturing, agro-allied, oil and gas, power, and telecommunications.

According to him, the support to Nigeria had included provision of liquidity and trade finance lines of more than $800 million during the banking consolidation when many international banks cut credit lines to the country and the provision of $1.8 billion to support the economy during the recent oil price shock between 2015 and 2016.

He enumerated that the bank’s current initiatives in Nigeria to include the development of testing and inspection centres across the country in collaboration with the Standards Organization of Nigeria; establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Tertiary Healthcare/Medical Park; potential participation in the Nigeria SEZ Investment Company Limited being promoted by the government.

Others include the support for industrial projects through loans to strategic banks; arrangement and disbursal of $750 million to the Bank of Industry in June; provision of trade and letter of credit lines to all Nigerian banks, in close coordination with Central Bank of Nigeria, in order to ensure access to trade finance; and development of an Afreximbank Africa Trade Centre in Abuja.

He said the trade fair, being promoted in collaboration with the African Union and the Egyptian government, would be the continent’s single largest trade fair and the first of its kind.

It will feature a seven-day trade show where Nigerian businesses could join others to showcase their capital goods and service offerings to a large market, including private sector corporates and government institutions from up to 55 African countries.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Finance has debunked the reports making the rounds that the new excise duty rates on alcoholic beverages and tobacco, approved by government, were targeted at local manufacturers.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Information, Hassan Dodo, noted that the new fiscal regime which came into effect since June 4, 2018, only seeks to achieve a dual benefit of raising the government’s revenues to support the nation’s growth and reducing the health hazards associated with tobacco-related diseases and alcohol abuse.

According to him, the excise is currently a 60 per cent duty rate imposed on imported alcoholic beverages and tobacco as part of measures by the government to encourage local production and protect local manufacturing industry.

“It should also be noted that beer and stout are currently under import prohibition to protect the industry from unfair competition from foreign brands.

“In addition, other locally excisable products such as non-alcoholic beverages, cosmetics, perfumes, corrugated papers or paper boards and cartons have no excise duties,” he said.

SARS-Operatives.jpg

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has banned the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force from conducting stop and search operations on roads except when necessary. This new order is following the general outcry by Nigerians who started and made the #EndSARS campaign trend on social media.

According to reports, IGP Ibrahim Idris promised to restructure and reposition the unit for effective service delivery. Idris also warned members of the group against acting as body-guards, delving into land matters and debt collection that were considered civil. He further warned that members of the unit must only embark on operations with the permission of the commissioner of police in charge of SARS in the police commands. He said:

“You must operate in official uniform clearly marked for identification. I just want to warn you all here that any officer caught engaging in these activities will be dealt with accordingly. The Nigeria Police force under my leadership shall operate strictly guided by the human rights principles as enshrined in the United Nations charter on human rights.”

He also mandated the Inspector-General of police’s monitoring units and the X-squad and other over sights unit of the force to monitor the activities of the SARS. The police boss noted that the establishment of the unit was due to activities of the men of the underworld.

He said that as part of measures to check the unit, they would be solely mandated to confront only armed robbery cases and violent crimes in the country, Idris also said that men deployed to SARS would undergo training, continuous assessment and psychometric test to determine their suitability or otherwise

Nigeria has lost fortunes to collapse of national shipping line

Hadiza-bala-usman.jpgManaging Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala-Usman

NPA woos private sector into shipping business

Nigeria as a maritime nation has lost fortunes to the collapse of the Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) about 13 years ago.The Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, disclosed this in Onne, Rivers State, during the official christening of the nation’s latest addition to the Nigerian ‘fleet’, the MV OSANYAMO, built by the STARZS Group and delivered by the Damen Ship Yard.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman, has implored the private sector to take advantage of the enabling environment and invest in the nation’s maritime sector.Obaseki said that with the sad demise of the national shipping line, the country lost and had since continued to forfeit several economic and human development opportunities.

He therefore expressed sincere desire to see the nation’s capacity building institutions synergize, in the bid to boost employment opportunities and consequently improve the citizens’ present economic conditions. He described the shipping terrain in Nigeria, not only as “scary” but also seriously dominated by foreign operators.

Obaseki commended the STARZS Group Chairman, and arrowhead of the Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), Greg Ogbeifun for his dedication, commitment and resourcefulness, particularly in mobilizing local funds, institutional supports and utilizing same, in a very challenging environment, in a bid to lift Nigeria’s flag as well as boost the employment opportunities for other Nigerians.

He said: “Apart from the brief spell when we had the NNSL which offered Nigerians sea opportunities, in the maritime industry as we know, just like most other assets, that endeavor failed, and as a country we lost that opportunity to build the human capacity and resources to go ahead to dominate”, the Governor stated.Obaseki was worried that the country’s weak economic position had seriously affected not only the nation’s balance of trade, but devastatingly also, the well-being and the future of the youths.

He enjoined the financial sector, the Local Content Board and other institutional bodies to synergize, create more opportunities and ensure a more assured future for Nigerians, particularly in the maritime sector, in the immediate future.

However, Usman said: “In addition to its contribution to the development of the maritime industry in the country, the introduction of MV OSANYAMO has the capacity for oil exploration and production in Nigeria. Regarded as the largest Damen ASD Tug range till date, the ASD Tug 5114 model vessel is purpose built to assist in tanker lifting operations alongside FPSOs in the Gulf of Guinea”, she added.

According to the Managing Director, “At 52.3 meters length, displacing 800 tonnes, a 268sqm deck space, at 5 tonnes load per m, 2 large fuel and water tanks; with transfer capability of 115 tonnes astern and 110 tonnes ahead, two main ABC16 DZC engines delivering 6,700kw powering twin kort nozzle thrusters manufactured by Schottel and additional capabilities like fire-fighting and oil recovery, the MV OSANYAMO is state-of-the-art tug, being a highly maneuverable vessel, fully equipped, for offshore operation.”While congratulating Messrs Starzs Investment Limited for the feat, the Managing Director reiterated the commitment of the NPA at all investors in the nation’s maritime sector, stressing that “Together, we can work to make the sector the pride of Nigeria and the African continent as a whole.”

Bitcoin ‘whales’ pulling cryptocurrency strings

But analysts have cast doubt on the veracity of that perception, highlighting that the bulk of bitcoin is in fact heavily concentrated in the hands of a powerful few.

Some 1,000 bitcoin holders — out of a total 11 million — hold some 35.4 percent of currency, according to BitInfoCharts.

These bitcoin “whales” — a word popularly used for big money players in financial markets — “literally control the currency”, said Bob McDowall, an expert in cryptocurrencies.

They can “dictate monetary policy, which is normally the function of a central bank or a government”, he said.

Unlike central bank-issued denominations, virtual currencies are produced, or “mined,” by banks of computers solving complex algorithms and freely traded online.

The other key difference with typical currencies is that the number of bitcoin in existence can never exceed 21 million.

There are currently some 17 million bitcoins in circulation.

Bitcoin’s surge in value from a few cents to a peak in December 2017 of $19,500 turned some of its first investors into billionaires.

The BitInfoCharts study also found that the top 10 account holders held 5.96 percent of the bitcoins.

Experts cautioned that the statistics should be taken with a pinch of salt, however, as several individuals could be behind a single account and one person could hold several accounts.

– ‘Whales’ with power? –
In a 24-hour period between Monday and Tuesday, the 100 biggest bitcoin transactions out of 200,000 accounted for 24 percent of the money volumes — an unimaginable level of concentration compared to other markets.

“In the currency market for example it’s such a huge market with so many transactions in a day that a pure actor can’t have any influence on a market,” Craig Erlam, an analyst for Oanda, a currency trading platform, told AFP.

Big bitcoin players, by contrast, can hold a lot of sway over the market.

To try and prevent excessive falls in the value of the currency, observers believe that the “whales” may be checking with each other first before putting in major orders, leading to suspicions of fraud in this unregulated market.

US authorities in May opened a criminal investigation into possible market manipulation of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, suspecting traders of “spoofing” — putting in false orders and quickly withdrawing them to move the currency.

But Aaron Brown, former director of AQR Capital Management, who runs a bitcoin fund, said the role of “whales” is being exaggerated.

He admitted that a coordinated sale of bitcoin by the biggest accounts could cause the value of the currency to plunge but said that the risk was theoretical and that major historical investors in the currency have a strong sense of community.

Since the end of 2017, the concentration of bitcoins has decreased, according to a study by Chainalysis, a think tank.

Several long-term investors have sold their bitcoins and a new type of player has entered the scene — speculators, who tend to hold fewer bitcoins but carry out more transactions.

“The supply of bitcoin available for trading has increased by 57 percent since December 2017,” the Chainalysis study found.

Russians are being taught how to smile in welcoming tourists as World Cup kicks off in 24-hours

Russians are being taught how to smile in?welcoming tourists as?World Cup kicks off in 24-hours

Workers in Russia are being taught how to smile in a bid to be more welcoming to tourists during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off tomorrow.

According to the BBC, Russians do not smile as much as other Europeans. An article in The Atlantic attempts to explain why when it loosely translates a Russian proverb: “Laughing for no reason is a sign of stupidity.”

However, there’s now a reason to smile as Russian news agency Tass claims that 1.5 million foreign tourists are expected in Russia during the World Cup. To prepare for all the tourists, workers in key companies like FIFA, Russian Railways, and Moscow Metro are all undergoing unique training.

The BBC says the world governing body for football and the two Russian transport firms are teaching staff how to smile. The report says that “Russian train conductors are being taught how to smile at foreigners,” in an effort to tackle the stereotype that its people are unfriendly.

Granddad didn’t recognize grandson so picked up wrong child from nursery

Granddad didn?t recognize grandson so picked up wrong child from nursery

A pensioner who could not recognize his grandson picked up the wrong boy from school and took him to hospital to have a flu injection.

The bizarre mix-up happened in the city of Guiyang in China’s south-western Guizhou Province and caused a kidnapping scare as the boy’s parents thought he had been abducted.

CCTV footage from the nursery school showed six-year-old Hongrui’s grandfather showing up, speaking to a teacher and then leaving the premises holding the hand of another boy name Hongyu. When the other boy’s parents arrived to pick their son, he was nowhere to be found.

The mum of Hongyu said: “We arrived 5:13pm and asked the teachers where our kid was. They said his grandad had picked him up.

“I said: ‘What grandad? His grandfather is in Qianxi [county]!’ I called my in-laws and asked whether they had come to Guiyang. They said no.”

Panic quickly ensued and a missing-person report was filed to the police and notices were shared on social media. One of these notices, which included a CCTV still of the grandad, was spotted by Hongrui’s aunt, who recognized her dad. She immediately called her nephew’s parents and the case was finally resolved some four hours later.

Hongrui’s parents had asked his grandad to pick him up from nursery school, but the pensioner appeared to forget what exactly his grandson looked like, so he grabbed Hongyu’s hand and left.

The nursery school’s principal Wu Shenglan said: “Our teacher asked the child who the man was, and he said: ‘This is my grandad.’ It was certainly an oversight over on her part, and she shouldn’t have trusted the child just like that.”

When asked why he went with the man, Hongyu said: “I don’t know.”

Hongrui’s dad, who was too busy to fetch his son himself, tried to explain his father’s blunder, saying: “He’d just arrived from the countryside the day before. He probably thought the boys looked alike! ”

The grandad himself said: “They called me and told me to fetch the child. I don’t live here.”

Asked why he could not recognize his own grandson, he said: “I just got here yesterday!”

Court sacks Aidoko as Kogi East Senator

Court sacks Aidoko as Kogi East Senator

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court today ordered the sack of the Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District, Senator Atai Aidoko. The lawmaker is in the Senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Justice Kolawole, delivering judgment in a pre-election suit, also ordered the immediate swearing in of Air Marshall Isaac Alfa (rtd.), of the PDP, by the Clerk of the National Assembly.

The court held that Aidoko was not properly nominated by the PDP for the March 2015 National Assembly election and consequently ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to immediately withdraw the certificate of return issued to Aidoko in 2015. It held that the primary election PDP conducted on December 7, 2014, in Idah, Kogi State, through which the sacked lawmaker emerged, lacked integrity and credibility.

The court ordered INEC to issue a fresh certificate of return to Alfa being the winner of the December 7, 2014 Senate primaries of the PDP.

The court awarded a cost of N750,000 against Aidoko and the PDP respectively.

A drunk man slipped and fell into a pan and the handle of the pan pierced his face, with four inches lodged in his eye socket.

The horrific accident occurred when the 64-year-old was stumbling around looking for kitchen utensils after having too much to drink. He lost his balance and fell forward towards the kitchen counter where he pierced his eye socket with a looped metal panhandle.

The man managed to call the emergency services and he was rushed by air ambulance to hospital in a critical condition.

The accident happened at his home in Karlsruhe in the south-western German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Medic Dr Carla Sander, said they x-rayed the skull, cranium and cervical region of the man, adding: “The cooking pan’s handle was positioned 10 centimetres in situ, coming from above, breaking through the right orbital rim.”

Luckily for the man, the panhandle was positioned in such a way that it entered his eye socket just below his right eyeball and missed the brain.

The team of doctors made up by Dr Carla Sander, Dr Ali Kurt, Prof Anton Dunsche and Dr Taha Tolga Sonmez performed emergency surgery lasting several hours. They not only successfully managed to remove the panhandle but also saved the man’s sight.

Tiffany Haddish finally reveals who bit Beyoncé

Tiffany Haddish finally reveals who bit Beyonc?

Actress and stand-up comedian, Tiffany Haddish, has seemingly confirmed the person responsible for biting Beyoncé.

Back in March, The Girls Trip star sparked a social media frenzy with #WhoBitBeyonce trending on Twitter, when she claimed in an interview with GQ that a guest got into a row with Beyonce at an after-party for Jay-Z‘s 4:44 concert at The Forum last December which ended in the R&B superstar getting bit.

It was later revealed that Love & Basketball star Sanaa Lathan was responsible for biting singer, which she quickly denied on Twitter, saying:  ‘Y’all are funny. Under no circumstances did I bite Beyonce and if I did it would’ve been a love bite ?,’

The much talked Beyoncé biter scandal was also put to rest when Tiffany claimed she had signed a Nondisclosure Agreement preventing her from giving the name.

But in an interview with the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter, Haddish confirmed that Love & Basketball star Sanaa Lathan was responsible for biting Beyoncé.

“I’m super good friends with her stepmom and her dad and they were mad at me. They were like, ‘Why would you do this to the family? You know, black actresses, you guys have to stick together, it’s so hard for you guys to get work as it is, why would you try to ruin her career?’ But I didn’t try to ruin her career. I never said her name! I was just trying to say how Beyoncé kept me from going to jail that night. I could have just shut my whole career down.”

Tiffany Haddish finally reveals who bit Beyonc?

She continued: “The other day, someone was saying, like, ‘Oh my God, you should keep your mouth shut ‘cause now you’re never gonna be invited to parties,’ but I got invited to way more parties after that. It’s ridiculous how many parties. ‘Can you come to my party?’ ‘Can you come to my thing?’ They want me to talk about something at their thing ‘cause they think, like, ‘This is gonna put me back on if Tiffany says something.’

Explaining further, the comic gave the aftermath of the unusual incident by revealing that Beyoncé went up to her husband Jay-Z in a state of shock.

“Beyonce stormed away, went up to Jay-Z, and was like, ‘Jay! Come here! This b—h…’ and snatched him. They went to the back of the room. I was like, ‘What just happened?’ And Beyoncé’s friend walked up and was like, ‘Can you believe this b***h just bit Beyoncé?!’

“Near the end of the party, Beyoncé’s at the bar, so I said to Beyoncé, ‘Did she really bite you?’ She was like, ‘Yeah.’ I was like, ‘She gonna get her ass beat tonight.’ She was like, ‘Tiffany, no. Don’t do that. That b—h is on drugs. She not even drunk. The b—h is on drugs. She’s not like that all the time. Just chill.’ “

Man had foot amputated then served it to friends for dinner (photos)

Man had foot amputated then served it to friends for dinner (photos)

A man cooked his foot and served it to a group of friends at a dinner party after being forced to have it amputated.

The bizarre incident happened two years ago but came to light this week after the amputee told his story on Reddit.

Around two years ago, he was seriously hurt in a motorcycle accident and despite a battle, medics were forced to amputate his foot. He then asked to keep it, and after completing some paperwork, he took it home.

On July 10th, 2016, just three weeks after the accident, he invited 11 open-minded friends to a special meal. Ten showed up. He served them apple strudel, quiche puff pastries, fruit tarts and chocolate cake with gin lemonade punches and mimosas. Then the main dish was his amputated foot which he named “Foot Taco”

Narrating, the man said:

So my friends and I always had this joke, If you could try human flesh in an ethical and healthy way, would you. And we always said of course. Well the opportunity came up and I called them on it. Originally I wanted to have [my foot] taxidermied or freeze-dried. How cool would it be to have my freeze-dried or taxidermied foot standing around the house as a lamp or a doorstop or something?

All of this came out of the idea that it’s my foot. It’s not going to be cremated and chucked into a landfill. It’s a part of me, and I want it back. Most hospitals have policies where they will release your body parts to you because of some religions where you have to be buried whole, so I just signed the paperwork.

My mom, who was helping me get back on my feet, so to speak, drove me back to pick it up.‘She doesn’t know I ate it, though. I went inside and the hospital gave me my foot in a red plastic biowaste bag. I brought it to the car and immediately put it in a cooler. It was pretty bizarre. I got back to my place and I froze it. I couldn’t find a taxidermist who would take me seriously and freeze-drying was too expensive.

It would have been $1,200 (£900) to freeze dry the thing. If I had the money I would have done it. Eventually, I decided to cast it in plaster to use as a doorstop, then capture a 3D rendering so I can make little keychains. When we got back to my house, I took the foot out, and it was so gross, man. It was covered in blood and had iodine all over it. After I cleaned it off, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-preserved it was.

Before we cast it, I quickly took a knife from my kitchen and cut a chunk off the top of my shin. The skin was already kind of off from the surgery, leaving a big chunk of muscle exposed. I just took the muscle. I put it in a plastic bag and put it in my freezer.

I invited 11 people. I said something like, ‘Remember how we always talked about how, if we ever had the chance to ethically eat human meat, would you do it? Well, I’m calling you on that. We doing this or what?’

Ten said yes. I guess we’re a weird group. The foot was the marinated overnight and sauteed it with onions, peppers, salt, pepper, and lime juice. It was later served on corn tortillas with a tomato sauce. People think it tastes like pork because in movies we hear it called “long pig.” But that term originated in places like Papua New Guinea, where they eat wild boar.

This particular cut was super beefy. It had a very pronounced, beefy flavor to it. The muscle I cut was tough and chewy. It tasted good, but the experience wasn’t the best.

Man had foot amputated then served it to friends for dinner (photos)

Rating the meal a solid 6.5 out of 10, he added:

It tasted like buffalo, but chewier. Super beefy and little fat. It’s way better than a hot dog or regular burger. Maybe equal with regular bacon, which is pretty decent. But nowhere near as good as butter seared sea scallops or a rare tenderloin seared in oil in a cast iron pan.

Russia 2018: Psychic pig that predicted Trump

Mystic Marcus, the psychic pig that predicted President Donald Trump’s victory, has picked Nigeria, Argentina as semi-finalists for the 2018 World Cup.

The 8-year-old psychic pig has a history of sniffing out winners. So far, it has had a 100 per cent track record of accurately predicting sports results according to his owner Juliette Stevens.

The black micro pig had previously guessed the winner of the 2014 World Cup and the Wimbledon tennis finals by picking apples. It even predicted Brexit and that Donald Trump would win the US presidential election.

Now Mystic Marcus is putting his skills to the test once more by forecasting the semi-finalists for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Russia 2018: Psychic pig that predicted Trump

Mystic Marcus predicts that Belgium, Argentina, Nigeria, and Uruguay will make it through.

Explaining the pig’s abilities, farmer and micro pig breeder Juliette from Heage, Derbyshire, said: “Marcus is the seventh child of a seventh child and apparently they’re gifted with special powers so maybe that’s where it comes from.

“A few years ago I was invited on a radio show because of Paul the octopus predicting results and they wanted to see if I had any animals that had the ability. I hadn’t tried the seventh child theory out so thought I’d give it a go.

“They used apples and oranges and Marcus predicted the football results, it was amazing.”
