Nigeria Vs Iceland

Ahmed Musa scored two superb goals as Nigeria jump-started their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Iceland in Group D on Saturday.

The Leicester City striker, comfortable playing in Russia after returning to CSKA Moscow on loan last season, found the net twice in the second half to push Nigeria into second place above their opponents and group favourites Argentina, whom they will play in the final group match with a spot in the knockout stage on the line.

Chances proved few and far between in an uninspiring first half in hot conditions.

Iceland’s Gylfi Sigurdsson sent a free kick towards the top corner in the opening minute but it was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, who moments later saved another shot from distance from the Everton man.

Those were the most clear-cut chances until just before the break, when Alfred Finnbogason nearly redirected a free kick on target.

Nigeria failed to put a shot on target in the first half but came out well after the break and took the lead within four minutes.

On a counter-attack, Victor Moses delivered a cross into Ahmed Musa, who did well to bring the ball down with a high boot before striking it on the half-volley into the roof of the net.

Iceland struggled to recover, with the closest they came to an equaliser arrving on 68 minutes when Rurik Gislason fired well over the bar.

And their task soon got tougher when Musa — moments after rattling the crossbar with a shot from 20 yards, ran past right-back Kari Arnason on the flank, then rounded goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson to score his second.

Iceland were handed a lifeline when Tyronne Ebuehi was late on a challenge on Finnbogason, and the referee gave a penalty — though only after reviewing the play on video.

But Sigurdsson sent his shot high over the bar and into the stands after a short run-up and Nigeria held on to take the three points.

The result helps the chances for Lionel Messi’s Argentina to advance, as they can move from bottom of the table into second with a win over Nigeria, so long as Iceland do not beat Croatia by an equal or larger margin.

Viral video: Lagos police command debunks masked lady’s allegation of opulence against inspector

Viral video: Lagos police command debunks masked lady

The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday debunked allegation raised by a masked lady in a video on social media accusing a police inspector, Marcel Nnabugwu of living in opulence and above his means.

The lady in the said video which went viral on the internet, alleged that Nnabugwu owns a property at No. 27, Remi Fani-Kayode Street, GRA, Ikeja worth N250million, as well as an exotic car with a customized license plate number titled “MCON”.

The lady further alleged in the video that the moment the officer in question enters into any night club, the club shuts down to all customers to attend to his needs.

She also alleged that the officer is worth over N2billion, claiming that he spent millions of Naira during his 30th Birthday party recently, and thereafter requested the police authorities to investigate the source of wealth of the officer whom she further alleged to be serving in Mopol 18 Owerri.

The attention of the police high command was therefore drawn to the video clip making the rounds on the internet in which a lady hooded to mask her identity, made serious allegations against a police sergeant and as a responsible and accountable institution, the Inspector General of Police ordered investigation, following which the Command swung into action, and the outcome revealed that there was no iota of truth in the claims by the masked lady.

Investigation conducted by the police to check  the veracity of the allegations revealed that there indeed exist one Christopher Marcel Nnabugwu, alias MCON in the police, and that the said officer was enlisted into the Police Force in the year 2000 and was trained at the Police College Oji River, Enugu State.

Further investigation revealed that the said Nnabugwu is presently an Inspector of Police serving at Ogudu Police Division where he is attached to Divisional Crime Branch (DCB) and not a police sergeant serving at Mopol 18 Owerri as alleged.

That Inspector Marcel Nnabugwu has never served in PMF (Police Mobile Force) since his enlistment into the Nigeria Police.

That his picture in Police Mobile Uniform down loaded by the masked woman from his wall on the Facebook as attested by the alleger, was the uniform he wore when he went for Mobilization exercise into the PMF for which he was unsuccessful.  According to the Inspector, his love of the PMF Uniform made him to wear it and take photograph to remember the day he went for the exercise even though he failed.

Investigation also revealed that he does not own a car nor landed property in any part of Nigeria or anywhere else in the world. The Inspector is a proud tenant at No. 125 Old Ota Road, Oke-Odo Agege Lagos where he occupies a room and parlor.

It was also discovered that Inspector Christopher Marcel Nabugwu is currently single owing to his financial status as he is still gathering resources for that purpose. It was shown in the video where he was singing and dancing.  Well, that’s his hobby so says the Inspector.

To further put a lie to the claim that the officer was worth N2billion, the officer’s   bank accounts number with corresponding balance as at June 20, 2018 revealed as thus: –  FCMB (2288247017) balance of N15,000.00 and

ACCESS (0041131987) balance of N5000.00

From all intent and purposes, the lady in the mask was out to cause mischief. Her evil machination was not only targeted at the poor, innocent officer but an attempt to malign and dent the image of the Nigeria Police and bring the entire organization into public opprobrium.

The Commissioner of Police said the development brought the need for people not to believe whatever they see on the social media hook, line and sinker.

The CP added, “we are on her heels. As a matter of fact, we are closing in on her. It’s a question of time.”

Oyo State government seals 50 companies over non-payment of tax

Oyo State government?seals 50 companies over non-payment of tax

The Board of Internal Revenue in Oyo State have sealed over 50 companies over failure to pay two-three years of outstanding professional and business registration and renewal fees.

The affected companies include conglomerates, banks, telecommunication outfit, hotels, events center and some merchant’s outfits located in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital. The week-long exercise commenced with banks located along Dugbe road sealed. In Oke-Ado, ring road and other parts of Ibadan South West local government area a major telecommunication outfit, hotels and events centres, a major beverage producing company and some private companies were sealed.

Chairman, Board of Internal Revenue in the state, Mr Bicci Alli told journalists in Ibadan on Thursday that it is essential for business owners to develop the culture of compliance of paying taxes promptly.

He said the corporate entities affected by the inter-ministerial emergency exercise have been duly informed before the exercise was carried out.

“We have done a lot in writing, sensitising them, talking to them before today. However, where they failed to do the right thing. We are very serious about compliance. People should be ready to pay. Our people should learn to do the right thing. They should develop the culture. Though we need to generate more revenue, it is not the amount per see but the culture of compliance that we want our people to cultivate,” he said.

Alli stressed that the board followed due process before sealing the companies and that assessment notice was served on the corporate entities to pay. “Bulk of the liabilities we are recovering now relates to 2016/2017, not even 2018. We have evidence to show that notices were sent to the corporate entities while reminders of seven days to pay followed,” Alli said.

”Most of the people championing #ENDSARS are not going to court because they don’t have evidence” ACP Abayomi Shogunle says

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Shogunle, says most of the Nigerians going on social media to accuse SARS officers of manhandling and brutalizing them have refused to go to court to seek redress because they lack evidence. Shogunle made this known when he spoke with Channels TV.

“Courts are still working in Nigeria, how many of such cases have you taken to the court for redress. Some have done that and in some cases, the court has awarded damages that the police should pay while the court has thrown out some other cases, having lacked merit. So, if you have any issue with the police, you can completely disregard reporting to the police and go straight to the court. Why are people not going to the courts? because they don’t have evidence or the facts they will use to pursue their cases” he said

He noted that most complaints of alleged SARS harassment come from Lagos State.

“Maybe it’s because more people in Lagos have more access to internet facilities than other people in Nigeria or maybe because of the high commercial activities in Lagos or maybe because most of the online media platforms are based in Lagos” he said

ASP Abayomi accused Nigerian lawyers of actively campaigning against the force on social media instead of seeking redress in the court.

“You see a lawyer tweeting about violence on social media where he can actually do a pro-bono case because part of the things they will use in giving you a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is that you must have done some cases for people free of charge, instead of charge. Instead of young lawyers going to court to pursue a career or to improve on their profession by taking such cases to court if you believe it is a case, they will rather prefer to come to social media and be typing all sorts. The courts are there and thank God they are working. The judiciary is completely independent of the executive arm of government so the fact that people are not going to courts, I think should be enough reason for us not to take them seriously.” he said

Abayomi says the force has a structure in place to attend to all criminal cases involving SARS officials.

“There is a Commissioner of Police, here in the Force Headquarters who is in charge of SARS operations nationwide and the Commissioner of Police reports to the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations and every state command has officers in charge of SARS. Some of them are Assistant Commissioners of Police, others are chief superintendents so that’s the structure. Once there is any case, they are given directives, they look into it and they carry out their investigation”.

PDP expresses fear over Senator Abaribe’s safety…demands his release by DSS

PDP expresses fear over Senator Abaribe?s safety?demands his release by DSS

Read the press statement from PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed fears over the safety of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, (PDP Abia), who was arrested by the Directorate of Security Services (DSS).

The party lamented that the Gestapo-style arrest of Abaribe has further confirmed the earlier alarm that the APC-led Federal Government has commenced a total clampdown on the opposition and perceived opponents of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid.

The clampdown on Senator Abaribe is feared to be in furtherance of the moves to intimidate and emasculate members of the National Assembly who are known for their outspokenness against the constitutional violations and misrule of the APC administration.

The PDP notes that the Federal Government has given no reasons for the arrest and detention of Senator Abaribe, who has been kept incommunicado without access to his lawyers and associates.

The party also notes the apprehension of Nigerians following numerous alleged plots by the Federal Government to frame up other lawmakers, including Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, as well as Senators Dino Melaye and Shehu Sani.

Nigerians can now see that our dear nation is fast descending into a fascist state where constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech no longer obtains and citizens are marked, arrested and detained on the whims and caprices of those in power.

The PDP charges the DSS to immediately declare Senator Abaribe’s whereabouts, as well as the charge against him. Moreover, the laws of our nation are clear on the process of arrest and prosecution of any citizen and not recourse to clampdown and intimidation.

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) has withdrawn the senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title and all the privileges attached to it from Joseph Nwobike, a lawyer sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment for perverting justice.

The chief registrar of the supreme court and a member of the LPPC, Hadizatu Mustapha, disclosed this in a statement. Mustapha explained that the committee temporarily revoked the title following Nwobike’s conviction.

“This is to notify the general public that the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee at its 132nd plenary session which was held today, the 21st day of June 2018; has suspended Joseph Nwobike Esq. from the use of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (and all other privileges attached to the rank) in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 25(2) of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee Guidelines.

“This is sequel to his conviction by the Lagos State High Court of Justice for perversion of justice in charge No.LD/2516C/2016-FRN V. Dr. Joseph Nwobike SAN and pending the investigation by the sub-committee setup by the Chairman of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, the Rt. Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen GCON.”

In April, a high court in Lagos sentenced Nwobike to prison without an option of fine after finding him guilty for 12 count charges bordering on perversion of justice. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged Nwobike with bribing some judges and court officials.

Court bars FG from seizing funds in accounts without BVN

Justice Nnamdi Dimg alt=’Court bars FG from seizing funds in accounts without BVN’ class=’img-responsive text-center’ style=’margin: auto;’ba of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, today stopped the Federal Government’s bid to seize funds in all accounts without the Bank Verification Number, BVN.

Justice Dimg alt=’Court bars FG from seizing funds in accounts without BVN’ class=’img-responsive text-center’ style=’margin: auto;’ba, said the FG failed to fulfill certain condition precedents that would entitle it to secure final forfeiture order in respect of funds in such accounts. He added that the FG failed to comply with section 17 of the Advanced Fee Fraud. He maintained that for FG to succeed in obtaining final forfeiture order, it must be proved that funds in such accounts were abandoned or unclaimed, were products of unlawful activity, as well as an advert placed for anyone laying claim to such funds to come forward.

The judge said the Federal government did not provide any evidence to prove that funds in the accounts were proceeds of crime, nor indicated efforts it made to ensure that banks complied with interim orders of the court.

It will be recalled that the court had in an ex-parte order it made on October 17, 2017, directed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and 19 commercial banks in the country to disclose all accounts in their custody without BVN and amounts in them.

The court further granted an interim order directing the banks to freeze funds in such accounts by stopping “all outward payments, operations or transactions”, pending the hearing of the substantive application that was filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, seeking permanent forfeiture of funds in such accounts to FG.

Engineer Evans was in a ghastly motor accident last weekend, on his way to Uniben, from Onitsha, Anambra State.

According to his friend, late Evan recently gained admission to pursue a Masters degree at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Read his tribute below:

Negodi nn??… What manner of life do we live here on earth?

Engr. Evans a.k.a Igbo boy was my closest colleague back in the days in the university (Unizik). After Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering Department was split to give rise to Electrical Engineering (EE) and Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) Departments, Igbo boy served the EE and myself, the ECE as class representatives for five years, but both classes shared same classrooms, similar and almost same lectures.

We worked and walked along at ease… Good times and sad moments; he was very industrious that he did many macro businesses to survive within the campus. Very agile, lively and sometimes could be loquacious tho (smiles)… Igbotic Igbo boy, after graduation kept fate with the hustle as being a graduate in Nigeria does not guarantee employment. He recently gained admission to pursue a masters degree in Uniben but a degree he pursued unto death.

He died in a ghastly motor accident last weekend, on his way to Uniben (from Onitsha, Anambra State)

Igbo boy, even in the brokenness of my heart, I commit your soul onto the merciful hands of your creator… Jee nke ?ma!

WAEC confirms improvement in Osun Education under Aregbesola

WAEC confirms improvement in Osun Education under Aregbesola

Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr Niyi Idowu, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Festus Olajide, Commissioner for Education, Mr Kola Omotunde-Young, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Adelani Baderinwa, the Osun Branch Controller of WAEC, Dr Mrs C.O. Akintunde at the press briefing on the development of education in the state of Osun.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has affirmed that there is improvement in the performance of secondary school students in the state of Osun in West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

Answering questions from journalists at a press conference addressed by the Commissioner for Education in the state, Mr Kola Omotunde-Young on Thursday, the Osun Branch Controller of WAEC, Dr Mrs C.O. Akintunde, confirmed that there is improvement in the performance of the students in WASSCE between 2011 and 2017.

Akintunde who read out the percentage of increment in the performance of the Osun students in WASSCE said: “In 2011, the performance of the students was 21.90 percent, it was 22.24 percent in 2012, it dropped to 20.54 in 2013.

“The students’ performance later dropped to 18.55 in 2014, but in 2015 it rose to 19.49 per cent. However, the students’ performance increased to 45.47 per cent in 2016 and 44.59 in 2017.”

WAEC confirms improvement in Osun Education under Aregbesola

L-R: Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Festus Olajide, Commissioner for Education, Mr Kola Omotunde-Young, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Adelani Baderinwa, at the press briefing on the development of education in the state of Osun.

The WAEC data corroborated the government’s position that there has been remarkable improvement in the standard of education in the state since the advent of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s government.

Speaking at the press conference, Omotunde-Young stated that the highest performance of Osun students in WASSCE before Aregbesola took the mantle of leadership in the state was 15 per cent in 2010, stating that the state had got as low as 6 per cent performance of students in 2007.

According to the ‘State of Osun Students Performance in WASSCE’ report collected from WAEC and presented to journalists by Omotunde-Young, the performance of Osun students was 10.95 per cent in 2006, 6.86 per cent in 2007, 10.11 per cent in 2008, 13.98 per cent in 2009 and 15.68 per cent in 2010.

WAEC confirms improvement in Osun Education under Aregbesola

Omotunde-Young said: As at November, 2010 when Aregbesola retrieved his mandate to govern the state of Osun, the situation in the Education Sector of Osun was marked with poor, dysfunctional, appalling, learning and teaching infrastructure across the State, non availability of adequate instructional materials, low morale of teachers, roughly dressed and malnourished pupils, poor monitoring and evaluation, low quality and dysfunctional Basic and Senior Secondary Education.

“All of these were crowned with very poor performance of students in internal and external examinations.

“To ensure the truth is told and records are straightened for all to know, so that the public will no longer be misled by the shameless, who have no inhibitions in deliberately spreading falsehood, the Ministry of Education applied to WAEC officially to furnish us with performance results from 2006 to 2017 in WASSCE.

“The results, official from WAEC, show that the best performance by students in Osun, for those with five credits including English and Mathematics, in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), in the five years before Aregbesola was 15.68 %.

“With the focused, deliberate and purposeful intervention of the government led by Aregbesola in the education sector the state has achieved 284% improvement in the performance of students in same examinations from 15.68% in 2010 to 44.47% in 2017 examinations.

“Not good enough yet, but it is a pointer to a better future based on the foundation laid by Aregbesola which should be allowed to germinate to fruition with continuity, by those who share his vision.

According to Omotunde-Young, the vision of Aregbeola’s government is to make public schools, ‘’world class schools’’ that produce confident, matriculate-able students who are first class scholars, cultural icons and models of good character, innovation and competence – the true Omoluabi.

34-year-old man Gabriel Bassey beats his mother to death during fight in Indianapolis, U.S

34-year-old man Gabriel Bassey beats his mother to death during fight in Indianapolis, U.S

A 34-year-old man, Gabriel Bassey has been arrested in Indianapolis, the U.S state of Indiana, on preliminary murder charges after police say he killed his mother.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department news release, the accused and his 54-year-old mother, Patricia Bassey, were involved in a fight on Tuesday.

The suspect called 911 on himself and told dispatchers he killed his mother during a fight.

Around 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, IMPD officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of East 20th Street, where they found Patricia suffering from apparent trauma.

Medics pronounced her dead. The cause of death was Blunt force trauma.

When police interviewed Bassey at police headquarters, he confessed to killing his mother. According to the affidavit,

“Gabriel became enraged with his mother after she slapped him during an argument the night before. Shoved his mother onto the sofa and began hitting her in the face… when she fell to the floor face down he continued to assault her.”

Neighbors in the adjoining condos say they didn’t hear any signs of an assault, during which court documents show Gabriel told police he repeatedly kicked his mom in the torso.

Court records claim, “The assault concluded when Gabriel finally realized what he was doing to his mother, stopped and went upstairs to bed… leaving his mother face down but breathing.”

When he woke up on Wednesday the suspect said he, “found his mother was in the same position she was the night before, but she was not breathing.”

“This issue is one that does not discriminate,” said Catherine O’Connor with the Julian Center.

O’Connor says while most people think of domestic violence between a husband and wife, crimes involving children and parents are also common.

A search of police records doesn’t show any prior domestic violence history involving the suspect, but O’Connor says there are often warning signs before violence turns deadly.

“I hope big picture folks realize this is a problem that belongs to all of us. They likely know someone in a situation where they need help,” said O’Connor. “Everyone plays a role in trying to stop it. This is something is important for every member of this community. Everyone has a role to play.” he added.

Gabriel was transported to the City-County Building  prisoner intake for processing and he Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case for a final charging decision.
