Serena Willams‘ pursuit to land her eighth Wimbledon title ended this afternoon as she was defeated by Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the 2018  Wimbledon women’s final.

 

The 36-year-old American and mother of one was defeated 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets which saw Kerber claim her first Wimbledon title to her 2016 Australian Open and US Open crowns.

Moments ago, Belgium achieved their best World Cup finish as goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard secured a 2-0 victory over England in today’s third-place playoff in Saint Petersburg.

 

Meunier, who missed the semi-final loss to France due to suspension, scored after just four minutes before Hazard grabbed a late second as Belgium eclipsed the side that came fourth at the 1986 edition.

 

Belgium have now defeated England twice in a fortnight, having waited 82 years to beat them before winning 1-0 in their group stage encounter.

Yesterday, a video showing 5 SARS officials assaulting a young man who refused to enter their van, made the rounds. Zone 2 police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmus has reacted to the video and is asking anyone who knows the young man in the video to please contact her.

”Sincerely my heart is with that young man in the trending video! That iron rod…. arrrrgh! That was uncalled for! Anyone with useful information about the young man should tell him to DM, text or call on 09071555555….we need to identify the men for proper action” she wrote

Legendary Ghanaian?Poet and former minister,?Prof. Atukwei Okai dies at 77

Ghana’s Iconic Poet and Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers Association, PAWA of Ghana,  Prof Atukwei Okai has died at the age of 77.

 

Okai died at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital, on Friday July 13th after a brief illness. A statement issued on behalf of the Odoi and Okai families and signed by Prof. Akilagpa Sawyerr, said his death was regrettable,“the Odoi and Okai families of Asere, Ga Mashie in the Greater Accra Region and the Pan African Writers Association, PAWA, announce with regret the passing of Prof. Atukwei Okai, which sad event occurred at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital in Accra after a short illness.”  

 

The statement described Okai as a national icon, a former government Minister and the current Secretary General of PAWA.  He was survived by his wife, Beatrice Okai and five daughters.  Okai was born on 15 March, 1941 in Accra, Ghana, and from the age of three to eight years lived in the country’s Northern Region, where his father (Ga by birth) was a school headmaster in Gambaga.

 

He also was a head of the GaDangbe department of Education at the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana.  In 1989 he was elected the first Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers’ Association (PAWA), which position he held till his death; his pioneering role at PAWA was recognized by the Entertainment Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana (ECRAG), who in 1991 presented him with their highest award, the Flagstar, the first time that this award has gone to a writer.

He also wrote three books of “verses and chants” for children.

Friday night fire razes six shops in Kano market

At least six shops were burnt at Kofar Wambai Jewelry Market (Kasuwar ‘Yan Yeri) in Kano on Friday night.

 

The Director of the State Fire Service, Alhaji Sagir Madaki, revealed in Kano on Saturday that the fire burnt six shops.

 

He said “we received a distress call from Kofar Wambai Police Division at about 8:57p.m that there was fire outbreak at the market. On receiving the information, we quickly sent some of our personnel and fire fighting vehicle to the scene of the incident at about 9:05p.m to quench the fire.”  

 

Madaki said that with the quick intervention of fire service personnel it took 55 minutes to put it under control so as not to spread to other shops. The director said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

 

He advised traders at the market and other residents to be more careful and desist from using instruments capable of triggering fire as a way of guarding against future occurence. The director also advised the people to keep fire bucket, fire blanket and fire extinguisher that would enablethem to curtail the spread of fire before calling on the fire service.

The 26-year-old Brazil-born Italy international was unveiled today just after his former manager was confirmed as the coach of the London club. The midfielder has been handed the No. 5 shirt at Stamford Bridge and agreed to a five-year contract that will see him pocket £102,000-a-week till 2023.

In a statement, he said: ‘I am absolutely ecstatic to be here at Chelsea. It is not easy to become part of such a big team so I am very, very happy.

The Lagos State Police Commandin in its resolve to mop up illegal and prohibited firearms just arrested a first and second suspect, namely, Wale Oye, male, age 37 years and Ganiyu Ajiboluwa, male, age 47 years.

 

They were arrested by a team of Inspector General of Police X-Squad operatives on patrol along Festac Extention by Apple Junction, Amuwo Odofin.

 

A single barrel Mossverg Pump action rifle with identification number B/NO D512429, one Zirve Magnum Pump action rifle with number B/NO 45639 and two live cartridges were recovered from the aforementioned suspects.

However during interrogation, the suspects claimed the guns were given to them by one Hon. Dipo Olorunrinu, male, age 47 years, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in the Lagos State House of Assembly, to escort him to a political rally.
The Honourable member was arrested and he admitted ownership of the guns. To further prove that the weapons are his, he produced expired licences dated 2015 and 2016 respectively. He however, could not justify his refusal to surrender the guns during the window period offered by the Inspector General of Police in the last nationwide mop up of illegal firearms and ammunition exercise.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, today had a closed door meeting PDP leaders who paid him a visit at his home in Ota, Ogun state.

 

The meeting which lasted for three hours, was attended by all the 21 members of the party’s National Working Committee.

 

Speaking on why they came to visit the former president who in February 2015 tore his membership card of the party, the National chairman of the opposition party, Uche Secondus, said they came for consultation on how to unseat the present administration.

”Obasanjo is a National leader of this country. He is the father of the nation and so we came to consult with him. Regardless of political parties, his direction is entirely needed now” Secondus said

Also speaking, a chieftain fo the party, Bode George said

”We must be fooling ourselves if we don’t tell ourselves the truth. This is not a matter of politics. We need good managers to manage the resources of our country for the benefit of the people. Let Nigerians wake up and asked themselves if they are better off today than before? if they are not, they can change just like they do in other democratic countries so that those removed can learn. We have learnt a lesson.

According to him, they use different accounts to beg for different things like school fees, house rent, hospital bills and even food but they end up sending the same account number.

President Buhari to visit the Netherlands tomorrow!

President Buhari will on Sunday, July 15, 2018, depart for the Netherlands to participate in activities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), at The Hague.

 

President Buhari is the only world leader invited to deliver a keynote address during the Solemn Hearing to commemorate the anniversary at Courtroom 1 of the ICC’s Headquarters at The Hague.

 

In buttressing Nigeria’s commitment as a member of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC, the President, as the current anti-corruption champion for the African Union, will use the global platform to reaffirm Nigeria’s support to the fundamental values of the Rome Statute and to the ideals of the ICC. He will also highlight his administration’s campaign against corruption in Nigeria.

 

After the event at the Courtroom, the President will have a bilateral meeting with the ICC Prosecutor, Ms Fatou Bensouda. President Buhari will attend a dinner hosted by Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji, the President of the ICC who is a Nigerian.

 

The Nigerian leader, while in The Hague, will meet with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, to discuss bilateral issues such as migration, peace and security, and economic cooperation.

 

The President and his delegation will have a separate roundtable with some Dutch Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of companies based in Nigeria with a view to urging them to expand their investments, especially in agriculture, oil and gas in Nigeria. President Buhari will also tour the Port of Rotterdam and Shell refinery Pernis, Hoogvliet.

 

On the margins of the President’s visit, Nigeria and the Netherlands will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral consultations. President Buhari’s delegation to the Netherlands will include Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State; Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

 

Others are the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh; the Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar; the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru; and the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala-Usman.
