Japanese government announces plan to hack over 200 million citizens ahead of 2020 Olympics

In preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, the Japanese government has approved a law amendment that will allow government workers to hack into unsecured Internet of Things (IoT) devices as part of a national survey.

The survey will be conducted by employees of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) under the supervision of the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

By using default passwords and password dictionaries, NICT employees will attempt to log into the IoT devices of Japanese consumers in an effort to gauge their security or lack thereof.

A list of insecure IoT devices that use default and simple passwords will be prepared and passed on to the authorities and ISPs so that they can alert consumers regarding how to properly secure these devices.

The survey will begin next month when NICT plans to test the password security of more than 200 million IoT devices starting with routers and web cams. Both consumer devices in citizens homes will be tested along with those on enterprise networks.

The Japanese government decided to carry out its unconventional survey as part of its plan to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. The government fears that hackers could exploit insecure IoT devices to launch attacks against the Games’ IT infrastructure just as Russian nation-state hackers deployed the Olympic Destroyer malware ahead of last year’s Pyeongchang winter Olympics.

Chimamanda Adichie speaks on social media, Donald Trump, and feminism

Chimamanda Adichie speaks on social media, Donald Trump, and feminism

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie sat down for an interview with FRANCE 24 and she shared her thoughts on topics such as social media, Donald Trump and feminism.

The Americanah author, while speaking to FRANCE 24’s Sonia Dridi during the first “Night of Ideas” in Washington, said the most challenging issue of our time is critical thinking.

She said:

One of the things I find most concerning is that I think critical thinking is imperial.

I think that we have to be very careful that we don’t lose sight of how important it is to think critically.

I sometimes worry that technology means that we lose sight of empathy. And this evening I talked about how social media can sometimes make us forget that there’s an actual human being on the other end…

I think that the ability to think critially and the ability to feel empathy those are very important.

Chimamanda Adichie speaks on social media, Donald Trump, and feminism

Sharing her opinion about social media and its uses, she admitted that she is not a big fan of social media but agreed that it can be a good thing if used right.

She added;

I think like most things in the world, it’s not so much that it’s inherently bad, it’s how we use it.

When asked if she thinks that “Trump’s America empowers public display of racism” , she replied: “Absolutely”

She added:

We have to remember that it’s in this period, in this presidency, that we have had people who parade publicly and they are very open about being white supremacists and it is important to remember that people have died, that a young woman was mowed to death by somebody who is a white supremacist.

“What was your reaction when you heard Donald Trump refer to African countries as shithole countries,” Sonia Dridi asked to which Ms Adichie replied:

Oh, I didn’t have a reaction. I think that some things are not worth reacting to.

Some things are just inconsequential.

Speaking more about Trump, she said:

I think that the American president is very similar to an African Big Man in so many ways, sort of intentionally and stubbornly ignorant, very disrespectful of everbody else… that short of thing.

Chimamanda added that many women have now been forced awake in the Trump era because they have come to realize that there are many rights they previously enjoyed that are now in jeopardy. This, she said, has made more women become involved in politics.

She added:

I’m very excited about the number of women who are becoming politically active.

I find it very exciting because I think it’s long overdue quite frankly, but also because it’s wonderful to know that women can now run as individuals rather than running as ‘The Woman Candidate.’

In the end, my idea of feminism is one in which people can be individuals.

So, I find it very exciting and I’m kind of looking forward to what will happen.

During the ceremony, the president said, ‘today’s occasion is the continuation of this Administration’s fight against corruption. It is a cardinal programme in the three point agenda that I promised to pursue and will continue to pursue as I seek the mandate of Nigerians for a second term’.

He added that, ‘corruption has negatively affected our political, economic and social life. Those opposed to our fight against corruption berate us for our focus, determination and single mindedness. Woman who revealed plans to marry her duvet begins to have second thoughts after people start calling her ‘Duvet Lady’

Woman who revealed plans to marry her duvet begins to have second thoughts after people start calling her

A woman who plans to marry her duvet has revealed she got cold feet after people began to refer to her as ‘Duvet Lady’.

Pascale Sellick, 49, went viral last month when she revealed that she plans to marry her duvet because it was the ‘most intimate and reliable relationship’ she had ever had.

The artist, from Exeter, Devon, became an internet sensation shortly after her announcement and this made her begin to have doubts.

However, she isn’t pulling out of the wedding just yet. Plans are still going on and the wedding will hold on Sunday, 10 February, at 2pm. The ceremony will be held at Rougemont Gardens in Exeter.

Woman who revealed plans to marry her duvet begins to have second thoughts after people start calling her

She said:

Everything happened so fast; it was like a whirlwind. It was completely unexpected that’s for sure.

It all started with an idea from Anna Fitzgerald, who is also an artist, to promote self-care and self-worth on Valentine’s Day as it can be a bit of a tricky time.

People think you need to be in a relationship to be happy.

It doesn’t matter if you’re single on Valentine’s Day as you can enjoy just having a duvet day; that was the original idea.

It was suggested I was the perfect person for playing the role of the bride because apparently I’m outgoing and have the right personality for it. I kind of agreed not knowing what was really involved.

Pascale added:

I never expected it to go global; we just wanted a bit of local publicity to advertise the event.

I know very little about the media and the next thing I knew the story had thousands of shares, clicks and comments. That was a bit overwhelming.

Some of the comments were positive but some were not.

Despite her doubts, Pascale said she is still going ahead with the wedding because once she commits to an idea, she sees it through.

She said:

I’m the sort of woman who if I say I’ll do something I will do it.

I am completely committed, as are the whole team of us behind it, and they have been very supportive. But deep down I wish I had never started it.

I’m really looking forward to the wedding. I’ll be taking it for what it is; a bit of fun as that was the whole original idea.

Oby Ezekwesili resigns from ACPN

Oby Ezekwesili resigns from ACPN

Former presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, Oby Ezekwesili has officially resigned from the party. Her resignation comes barely a week after she withdrew from the presidential race.

At a world press conference today, Ezekwesili who was a former minister of education, said she has returned ACPN membership card and all other items in her possession to the party.

Recall that shortly after her withdrawal from the race, the ACPN announced their support for President Buhari and accused her of using them to seek political relevance.

At the press conference, Ezekwesili said she was not surprised that the ACPN endorsed Buhari.

Their actions last week did not surprise me one bit. My relationship with the ACPN became problematic once they faced the reality of my modest financial means that I had transparently disclosed to them from the beginning. Their mistake was that they harboured two wrong assumptions about me.

First, they assumed that I was one of those who served in government and had a stash of looted public funds hidden somewhere to expend on the elections. When they realized that was not the case, they made a second wrong assumption by believing that I would be willing to go and obtain foreign cash to prosecute my campaign.’’ he said

Breaking: Appeal Court orders INEC to include APC candidates in Rivers State governorship elections

Breaking: Appeal Court orders INEC to include APC candidates in Rivers State governorship elections

The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State, has granted stay of execution of the lower court’s judgement nulifying all primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in RIvers State and restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from fielding the party’s candidates in the forthcoming general election.

Back in January, Justice Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt had nullified both the direct and indirect primaries conducted by two factions of the party. He also restrained INEC from recognising any candidates of the APC for the 2019 general election in the state.

While a faction of the party loyal to former Governor Rotimi Ameachi had produced Tonye Cole as its candidate from its primary, the other loyal to Senator Magnus Abe produced him as its own candidate. The national secretariat of the party recognised Cole as the authentic candidate of the party and forwarded his name to INEC.

Ruling on a suit filed by Abe, the court observed that both the direct and indirect primaries were held during the pendency of the suit at the Rivers State High Court. Omotosho held that the APC conducted the indirect primaries in gross disrespect of the pending suit before the court.

The court therefore held that the names sent by the Amaechi faction and the National Working Committee of the APC to INEC for the 2019 general elections were illegal and should be disregarded.  When INEC released its list of candidates for the general election last week, it omiited APC in Rivers, based on the ruling of the High Court. However, it said it would wait to see if the Appeal Court would give a different ruling on the controversy, which has now happened.

Evans the ‘kidnapper’ loses N1bn fundamental rights suit against Nigerian police over seizure of his property

Evans the

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday, struck out a fundamental rights enforcement procedure suit filed by Chukwudumeme Onwamadike (a.k.a. Evans), an alleged kidnap kingpin, against the Police over seizure of his property.

Ruling on the case, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun held that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case, noting that the suit ought to have been filed before a Lagos State High Court, before which the applicant was facing charges of kidnapping.

Evans, through his counsel, Olukoya Ogungbeje, filed the suit in June 2018 and joined the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police and IGP’s Intelligence Response Team, as respondents. In the suit, he prayed the court to declare that the alleged forceful seizure of his property by the respondents, without any court order, was illegal and unconstitutional.

The properties listed included N500million, another N500million, two residential houses located at Magodo, Lagos State, a Brigade wristwatch worth $20,000, necklaces worth $25,000 and five pieces of diamond rings. Also listed are one Lexus 470, a Grand Cherokee, a Toyota Highlander, 85 Samsung television sets, 45KVA generator, 22KVA generator, 20KVA inverter worth N10million and five sets of freezers.

Evans had sought a declaration releasing the property, just as he asked the court for an order compelling the respondents to unconditionally unseal and vacate without delay, the two residential houses located at Magodo.

The judge noted that the respondents did not file any defence, in spite of being served hearing notices, and held that when confronted with a claim under the fundamental rights enforcement procedure, it would be important for the court to critically look at the reliefs sought.  According to her, the main issue to be decided is whether the plaintiff’s claim constitutes a violation of his rights under the Fundamental Human Rights Procedure, adding that the right to own property cannot be denied except for the due process of the law.

She held that the applicant failed to show that, within the circumstances of his arrest, the properties were forcefully seized. “The only conclusion I can draw is that the property were taken consequent upon his trial for kidnapping before the Lagos State High Court. This court must be careful not to interfere with due process of the ongoing trial of the applicant before the Lagos State High Court. This court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain this case; same is hereby struck out,”  the judge said.

Other prayers sought by Evans included an order compelling the respondents to apologise to him and pay him N1billion as damages for the alleged forceful seizure of his property.  He also sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from taking any action against him or any of his property in relation to this case.

7-year-old boy dies after being buried alive by his guardians for not knowing the bible

7-year-old boy dies after being buried alive by his guardians for not knowing the bible

A seven-year-old boy has died after allegedly being buried alive by his guardians because he didn’t know the Bible.

Ethan Hauschultz was reportedly buried in a ‘little coffin of snow’ while in the care of his court-appointed guardians Timothy Hauschultz and Tina Hauschultz. It is not known exactly how the Hauschultzs are related to Ethan, but they are listed as his legal guardians.

The couple are accused of always making the boy and his twin brother serve sickening punishments whenever they failed to memorise verses from the Bible. The punishment included being made to hold a 44-pound log for two hours every day for a week.

Timothy and Tina Hauschultz’s 15-year-old son is also alleged to have tortured the 7-year-old boy. The teenager once kicked and punched Ethan at least 100 times, rolled a heavy log over his body and stood on his head while he was face-down in a puddle.

Medical reports show Ethan died in April last year from hypothermia and blunt force trauma to the head, abdomen and chest, and a fractured rib.

The 15-year-old boy told police that he was in charge of supervising Ethan and his twin, who were both being made to carrying logs after failing to recite 13 Bible verses of the bible passage chosen by Timothy.

Timothy, 48, has been charged with felony murder and felony contributing to the delinquency of a child. Tina, 35, is charged with failing to prevent bodily harm and intentionally contributing to the delinquency of a child. The couple’s teenage son has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide.

Ethan’s birth mother Andrea Everett spoke about the moment she arrived at her son’s side during his hospital treatment.

She said:

When I got there Ethan did not have a heartbeat and his temperature was 23 degrees.

They worked on him for five hours, giving him CPR the entire time, and still couldn’t get a heartbeat. There was no brain activity.

I want justice for my son, and the person responsible should go to jail for a very long time.
