FG reacts after Teachers of a boarding school for deaf kids in Abuja are accused of sexually exploiting the pupils

The Department of State Security DSS and the Nigeria Police have began an investigation into an alleged abuse of some pupils of the Abuja School for the Deaf in Kuje.

The security agents were alerted recently after suspected ritualists invaded the school, abducted and molested some pupils, while initiating some others  into cult groups.

One of the parents of the affected students who spoke on Brekete (a breakfast programme on Human Rights radio) in Abuja on Tuesday February 5th, said that her son who attends the school had been molested by teachers in the school.

It was gathered some parents also brought the matter to the attention of the Federal Ministry of Education who contacted the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the government authorities overseeing the school.

The Federal Ministry of Education asked the DSS carry  a detailed investigation and  it was discovered that no case of molestation was found at the end of the investigation by the DSS.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, told the Nation that after a detailed investigation, it was discovered that no single sign of molestation was found.

The Permanent Secretary said the government again visited the school on Tuesday with a team of medical doctors and ordered a thorough examination of some of the pupils alleged to have been molested. Echono said 40 pupils were examined by a team of doctors and gynecologists and no sign of any form of molestation found on their bodies.

“We have done full investigation, involved the DSS and did surveillance for ten days. We embedded DSS operatives among the staff claiming they were posted there just to be watching day and night in the school to try and find out if anything unusual is going on.

“I called 64 different parents to find out if there had been any case, even of a child dying in the school not to talk about missing. There was no such case.

“We did 40 examinations today physically with their parents, covered no such single case out of the 40 that we did today. Medical doctors and gynecologists, did the test today and not a single case have been found. We are going to address a press conference when we finish.”

A statement issued by the Assistant Director (Information), FCT Secretariat, Anthony Ogunleye said:

“The attention of the Education Secretariat has been drawn to the alleged abuse of a pupil of the Abuja School for the Deaf Kuje as broadcast by an Abuja based radio station. The Secretary for Education is deeply concerned by the very serious allegations especially since the well-being of a minor is concerned. While the highly emotional broadcast has prompted an investigation by the Nigerian Police, the Secretary for Education has also ordered an internal investigation into the matter.

“While we await the result of the investigation by the law enforcement agencies we want to assure all parents and guardians that their children and wards are quite safe in our custody. We therefore enjoin them to remain calm and all enquiries can be sent to either the Secretary for Education or the Chairman, FCT Universal Basic Education Board.”

When contacted, the Spokesperson for the FCT Command, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, simply said: “We are aware of the case and we are investigating it.”

National Universities Commission gives licence to four new universities

National Universities Commission?gives licence to four new universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC), has given provisional approval to four new private universities to commence academic programmes.

Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Executive Secretary, NUC at the presentation of the licences to the universities in Abuja on Tuesday, said the four universities had been under scrutiny since 2006. The universities are: Greenfield University, Kaduna State, Dominion University, Ibadan, Trinity University, Laloko, Ogun, and Westland University, Iwo, Osun.

With the approval, Nigeria now has 79 private universities, and a total of 173 universities, private and public. Rasheed underscored the need to increase the number of universities in the country, taking into consideration the country’s 200 million population.  He added that with the country’s population, only about two million students can access university education.

“Only less than 6 per cent students’ enrolment is in private universities. We hope the NUC work closely with you to ensure we introduce courses that are more attractive to prospective students and more appropriate to our current move to reposition the education system in Nigeria.

All over the world, private initiatives are welcome. Proper education cannot be handled by government alone. The NUC is not ready to sacrifice quality on the altar of access; we must ensure adherence to quality; we do not want to encourage you to run the university with impunity.’’

Rasheed added that the commission was currently processing about 270 applications in which many of them are active for approval.

Yet, they still want him to continue as President. Must they ruin Nigeria just to promote their personal interests? Why can’t they just allow this man to go home and rest?

Finally, Governor Ambode presents N852.316bn budget for 2019 to State House of Assembly

Finally, Governor Ambode presents?N852.316bn budget for 2019 to State?House of Assembly

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday presented the year 2019 budget proposal of N852.316billion to the House of Assembly, with a pledge that it had been carefully prepared to be all-encompassing and dedicated to complete major ongoing projects in the State.

The Governor said N462.757billion representing 54 percent of the total budget size had been earmarked for capital expenditure, while N389.560billion representing 46 percent had been dedicated to recurrent expenditure, saying that key projects such as the Oshodi-Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road and Oshodi Interchange Terminal, among others would be completed.

He said from inception of his administration, nine key areas were given priority after careful assessment of the needs of the citizens, adding that such had informed the massive investment in the said sectors which he listed to include security, transport / traffic management, economy -including tourism and agriculture, housing, education, health, infrastructure – social and physical, water, wealth creation – skill acquisition/microfinance, e-Governance and enhanced capacity building, sustainable environment and smart city projects.

Giving details of what informed the budget size, Governor Ambode said the performance of Y2018 budget of N1.046trn as at November 2018 stood at 60 percent owing to reduction in revenue projections, while the total revenue stood at N530.192billion.

According to him, “In the outgoing year, however, we experienced a reduction in our revenue projections, which affected our projected performance and our desired implementation of the Y2018 Budget. The overall Budget performance as at November 2018 stood at 60 per cent/N574,206billion with actual cumulative total revenue of N530,192billion/64 per cent, Capital Expenditure closed at N311,930billion/49 per cent and Recurrent Expenditure performed at N262,276billion/82 per cent.

“In preparing the Year 2019 Budget, therefore, we were very mindful of the out-going year performance, the yearnings of our people and the fact that we are going into an election year. Consequently, we are today presenting a Budget that will be all-encompassing, reflect the level of resources that will be available and with special consideration to the completion of major on-going projects in the State.”

While outlining the key components of the Y2019 budget and the sectoral allocations, the Governor said with priority given to completion of major infrastructure projects and smooth transition to the next administration, the government was proposing a total budget size of ‘N852,316,936,483,’ including a deficit financing of N77.086billion which is expected to be sourced from internal loans and other sources.

Finally, Governor Ambode presents?N852.316bn budget for 2019 to State?House of Assembly

He added: “The projected total revenue for Year 2019 is ?775.231billion, of which ?606.291billion is expected to be generated internally,?168.940billion is expected from Federal Transfers while a total of ?77.086billion will be sourced through deficit financing within our medium term expenditure framework.

“In 2019, as was with our previous budgets, Economic Affairs still dominates the sectoral allocation of the proposed budget. This is due to our continued focus on the completion of major on-going projects such as: Oshodi-Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road; Agege Pen Cinema Flyover; Phase II of Aradagun-Iworo -Epeme Road, Oshodi Interchange Terminal; completion of JK Randle Complex, Onikan Stadium; Imota Rice Mill; Renovation/Furnishing of Lagos Revenue House, amongst others in order to meet their specified deliverable outcomes without any bias or prejudice to others.”

Expressing optimism that the revenues of the State would improve in 2019, Governor Ambode said the government had begun consolidating on the already established public financial management and technology-driven revenue reforms through data integration and use of multi-payment channels, just as he said that every strata of the society would benefit from the budget.

“The Year 2019 Budget has been carefully planned to accommodate all and sundry; women, youth and physically challenged, young and old. We will continue to spread development to all part of our state even as we embark on effective transition knowing fully well that the implementation, failure or success of the Budget depend on all of us,” he said.

Governor Ambode commended the Speaker and members of the Assembly for the support accorded his administration in the last three and half years, while also acknowledging the role of Royal Fathers, Religious leaders, members of the Business Community, Professional Bodies, Development Partners, Non-Governmental Organisations, public servants and all residents as well as members of the fourth estate of the realm for their various support and contribution during the lifespan of his administration.

In his remarks, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Mudashiru Obasa expressed optimism that the budget would be of great benefit to the people of the State, just as he assured that the House would work with the executive to pass the budget.

The Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command is investigating a case of rape reported  against one Razaq Oluwaseun Oke, 28, in Blue and Don-Chima George, 25,in Black of Dallankester Hotels, Lekki, Phase one Lagos.

A statement from the Lagos state police command, CSP Chike Oti, states that the duo allegedly took a girl, 23, to a club on Saturday, February 2, 2019, unknown to her that they had ulterior motive. While at the club, they mixed the young woman’s drink with a substance that made her weak and almost unconscious.

Satisfied that the drug was beginning to affect the victim, they quietly left the club with her to Dallankester Hotels in Lekki Phase one, owned by the father of one of the suspects named Don-Chima George.

At the hotel, they took turns to rape her. As if that wasn’t enough, they filmed the abuse.

When the victim woke up from the induced sleep, she confronted the suspects who denied having carnal knowledge of her. Not satisfied, she placed a call to her elder brother complaining that she had been violated.  The brother immediately invited policemen from Maroko Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Isah Abdulmajid to the scene.

On searching the suspects, the DPO recovered their phones and went through their video recordings where he saw a video of the suspects sexually abusing the apparently unconscious  victim.

The state  Commissioner of Police, CP Edgal Imohimi has directed the Gender Section of the Command to investigate and diligently prosecute the suspects to serve as deterrent to others.

Ms Flood, 26, told MailOnline:

Natalie was bullied at school. All she ever wanted in life was to be a mum and she lived for those kids. They were her whole world. Now she’s lost four of her babies she’ll be totally devastated. I don’t know how she’ll cope without them.

A nearby resident described how a sheet of flames engulfed an upstairs window at the semi-detached property on Sycamore Lane in the Highfields area of Stafford.

The witness said:

We heard a bang and looked out of the back window upstairs. At the start it was just a sheet of fire coming out of the bedroom window. It seemed to take ages for the fire brigade to arrive – it seemed like forever.

The neighbours came out and drove their car out of the back garden and there were lots of fire engines and police.

Neighbour Bryan Pickering, who lives around 40 yards from the scene of the fire, was among those who contacted the emergency services after spotting the blaze.

He said:

We were straight on to 999. The flames were coming out that bad, there was nothing you could have done – even with a ladder.

Another resident, who was also reluctant to give her name, said she had not realised that anyone had died in the blaze until she heard a news broadcast confirming that four children had died.

The woman said:

The room at the back was completely full of flames.

We just stood there with our hands over our mouths wondering what was going to happen next.

A man and a woman got into an ambulance. They were in blankets and she had the little one in her arms. ‘I’d assumed they had all got out. It’s terribly sad, almost beyond belief.

Fire crews remain at the scene combing for clues as to what triggered the blaze.
