Rare black leopard ‘Black Panther” spotted in Africa for the first time in 100 years (Photos)

Biologists have captured a rare footage of a big Black Leopard also known as ‘Black Panther’ walking majestically in Kenya, making it the first time the animal has been photographed in Africa since 1909.

Nick Pilfold, a San Diego Zoo global scientist, said they captured the footage after months of watching and waiting. His team of biologists had placed remote wildlife cameras to track the leopard population near Loisaba Conservancy in Laikipia County last year when they heard unconfirmed reports of a possible black leopard sighting.

“We intensified our camera placement in the area the reports were being made. Within a few months, we were rewarded with multiple observations on our cameras” he said on Tuesday night.

The female leopard’s coat color is pitch black as a result of melanism, a gene mutation that results in an over-production of pigment, Pilfold said. It’s the opposite of albinism and although the leopard’s coat appears black during the day, its rosette patterns are visible in nighttime infrared imagery.

While there have been reports of sightings of black leopards  the last confirmed observation was in Ethiopia more than a century ago, he said. Pilfold is part of a team from the San Diego Zoo working with local partners, including the Kenya Wildlife Service, to monitor leopard populations in the area and help preserve the species.

INEC confirms that 4,695 smart card readers got burnt in the Anambra State inferno

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that 4,695 Smart Card Readers were destroyed in the fire that occurred in its office in Awka, Anambra on Tuesday.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner, Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, made the confirmation in a statement issued in Awka saying, there was no fatality or injury report but recalled that similar incidents had occurred in the last 12 days following closely behind those of Isiala Ngwa and Qua’an pan Local Governments offices in Abia and Plateau States respectively.

Okoye said that though the incident no doubt was a setback to the commission’s preparation for the smooth conduct of the elections in Anambra, immediate measures had been taken to ameliorate the situation.

He said that the measures were the mopping up of some of the spare card readers from other states to deploy to Anambra for smooth conduct of the general elections come February 16th and March 2nd. The national commissioner said that with the steps taken so far, the commission remained confident that the election in the state would proceed as scheduled.

Nigerian nanny found guilty of murdering 8-month-old baby by force-feeding her in the US

A Nigerian nanny has been found guilty of murdering an 8-month-old baby by force-feeding her half a pint of milk in less than 30 seconds.

Oluremi Adeleye, 73, was trusted with the care of 8-month-old Enita Salubi in Maryland. But the nanny was captured on a nanny cam taking the teat off a bottle as she forced the child to guzzle down baby formula in October 2016.

Prosecutors say the carer performed the sickening punishment after the baby’s crying woke her from a nap, according to the Washington Post.

In footage from the nanny cam, Enita could be seen struggling as Adeleye tipped the contents of a nearly full bottle into her mouth – drowning her with the milk. The toddler then collapsed but Adeleye picked her up and even tried to force her to drink another bottle of milk.

Nigerian nanny found guilty of murdering 8-month-old baby by force-feeding her in the US

Prosecuting attorney Artemis Moutsatsos told Prince George’s County Circuit Court:

She was getting her to shut up by pouring down the milk.

In the harrowing footage, played in court, baby Enita could then be seen going limp as Adeleye tried to rouse her. Adeleye then called the toddler’s dad who called 911 as he raced home.

Paramedics said that milk was pouring out of the baby’s mouth and nose as they performed CPR.

When detectives arrived, the nanny lied to them about removing the teat from the bottle. She only changed her story when police told her there was a video of the incident.

Nigerian-born Adeleye, a mum of five and grandmother of 10, was convicted on Monday of child abuse and second-degree murder.

She said through an interpreter:

I did what I needed to do to make sure the baby had food in the stomach.

Recalling the day Enita died, her father Influence Salubi told the court:

You left home with a live baby and come home with a dead baby.

It’s not something I can forget.

Nikia Porter, the baby’s mum, described her child as their “beauty” and said she is sorely missed.

Adeleye will be sentenced on 3 May. She faces up to 70 years in prison.

Coca-Cola under fire for naming a can of drink after the female sex organ

Coca-Cola company has been criticized for naming a can of drink after the female sex organ.

The company has a popular ad campaign that encourages sharing by writing the name of a person on a coke bottle with the words, “share a coke with… (person’s name)”

One can of coke seen in South Africa had the words, “Share a Coke with Xitombo”

Xitombo means vagina in South Africa.

When a photo of the coke can with the word “Xitombo” was shared online, it quickly went viral. Social media users called out the company and there were massive calls for the company to correct its mistake.

Replying to the outrage, Coca-Cola explained that the campaign had three elements which included digital activation and engaging with consumers to personalize their own Coke cans.

The statement from Coca-Cola reads:

The main element of the campaign was to place approximately 700 of South Africa’s most popular names on Coca-Cola cans and bottles, which were sold in stores.

These names were identified in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs and Stats SA.

The names spread across the 11 official languages and were sent to two professional linguists for phonetic treatment, reviewed by various internal approval teams and finally printed, distributed and sold in the market.

The Xitsonga word that led to this incident was not one of these names identified by the Department of Home Affairs, nor was the can marketed or sold by Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola acknowledged their mistake and said that they are “very disappointed that the controls we put in place could be taken advantage of in this manner.”

$16bn power sector fraud: ”Stop accusing me ignorantly” – Obasanjo tells Buhari

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reacted to the recent call by President Buhari for a probe of the $16 billion spent on power during the 16-year PDP rule. President Buhari at the APC presidential rally in Bayelsa state on Tuesday February 12th, hinted that there will be probe on all the past governments involed in the $16 billion power project.

Reacting to the call for the probe, Obasanjo in a statement released by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, said the request for a probe on the power project is borne out of ignorance.

In the statement, the former president said he had given a detailed account of how the money was spent for the power project in his widely read book, My Watch, and that if President Buhari cannot read it, he should get one of his aides to read it and interprete in a language best suitable. Read the statement below

”It has come to the attention of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, apparently without correct information and based on ignorance, suggested that $16 billion was wasted on power projects by “a former President.

“We believe that the President was re-echoing the unsubstantiated allegation against Chief Obasanjo by his own predecessor but one.

“While it is doubtful that a President with proper understanding of the issue would utter such, it should be pointed out that records from the National Assembly had exculpated President Obasanjo of any wrong-doing concerning the power sector and has proved the allegations as false.

“For the records, Chief Obasanjo has addressed the issues of the power sector and the allegations against him on many occasions and platforms, including in his widely publicised book, “My Watch” in which he exhaustively stated the facts and reproduced various reports by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which conducted a clinical investigation into the allegations against Chief Obasanjo, and the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the Recommendations in the Report of the Committee on Power on the Investigation into how the Huge Sums Of Money was Spent on Power Generation, Transmission And Distribution between June 1999 and May 2007 without Commensurate Result.

“”We recommend that the President and his co-travellers should read Chapters 41, 42, 43 and 47 of My Watch for Chief Obasanjo’s insights and perspectives on the power sector and indeed what transpired when the allegation of $16 billion on power projects was previously made.

“If he cannot read the three-volume book, he should detail his aides to do so and summarise the chapters in a language that he will easily understand.

“”In the same statement credited to the President, it was alleged that there was some bragging by Chief Obasanjo over $16 billion spent on power. To inform the uninformed, the so-called $16 billion power expenditure was an allegation against Chief Obasanjo’s administration and not his claim.

“The President also queried where the power generated is. The answer is simple: The power is in the seven National Integrated Power Projects and eighteen gas turbines that Chief Obasanjo’s successor who originally made the allegation of $16 billion did not clear from the ports for over a year and the civil works done on the sites.

“”Chief Obasanjo challenges, and in fact encourages, anybody to set up another enquiry if in doubt and unsatisfied with the EFCC report and that of the Hon. Aminu Tambuwal-led ad-hoc committee.”

The politicians tried to pretend they didn’t see the water and continued chatting with one another. But their bottled muddy water was carefully placed on the ground beside them.

The residents of Karare area were angered that their leaders had failed to come up with a solution to their perennial water problem. The water the villagers use for cooking, drinking and cleaning is contaminated and completely unfit for human consumption and they wanted to give their leaders a rare chance to see the kind of life they live.

Canadian singer, Avril Lavigne addresses conspiracy theory that she died and was replaced with a clone

Canadian singer, Avril Lavigne in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, talked about the death hoax that has been making rounds for nearly a decade.

When she was asked about the bizarre dead-and-cloned rumor that keeps popping up, she said she thinks it’s bonkers saying how else are you supposed to feel about the rumor that you have not only been dead for over 15 years, but have been permanently replaced by your body double?

In her words, ‘more like that it’s just a dumb internet rumor and [I’m] flabbergasted that people bought into it. Isn’t that so weird? It’s so dumb. And I look the exact same. On one hand, everyone is like, ‘Oh my god, you look the same,’ and on the other hand people are like, ‘Oh my god, she died.’

The rumours started in 2011 when a Brazilian blog called “Avril Está Morta,” which means “Avril Is Dead,” hit the internet. The site claims that Lavigne died by suicide in 2003 and the current Avril is not the real Avril, but someone pretending to be the real Avril to record music as the real Avril, and perform as the real Avril. According to them, an Avril Lavigne lookalike named Melissa Vandella took the pop-rock musician’s place.
