‘The haste with which CJN Onnoghen’s trial is being pursued leaves a lot to be desired’ – Bukola Saraki

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen will be tried at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Monday, January 14th on a six count charge over his alleged failure to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

Reacting to the hasty trial, Senate President Bukola Saraki who was once tried by the CCT has just said, ‘the proposed trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) has once again opened up the debate on the transparency and neutrality of this administration’s fight against corruption’.

Saraki added that, ‘the haste with which this trial is being pursued leaves a lot to be desired. From last Wednesday when the so-called petition against the CJN was initiated to the period the trial is scheduled to commence has been barely three working days’.

South-South governors tell Chief Justice Onnoghen to shun Code of Conduct trial today

South-South governors tell Chief Justice?Onnoghen to shun Code of Conduct trial today

Five out of six governors of Nigeria’s South-South have come in defence of Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen at an emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday and said the move to prosecute the top jurist for alleged asset declaration infractions was vindictive and persecutory, and should be condemned by lovers of democracy.

The governors consequently prevailed on Onnoghen not to appear when the trial opens at the tribunal on Monday morning.

The governors at the meeting were Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, who chaired it at his guest house in Maitama, Abuja, Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Ben Ayade of Cross River and Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom.

The meeting began at about 4:00 p.m. and ended with a communique shortly after 7:30 p.m. The governors declined to take questions from reporters despite earlier promise in the announcement that there would be a press briefing after the closed-door meeting.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State were both absent at the meeting. The governors are the latest to express outrage about the scheduled trial of the Cross River-born Mr Onnoghen, following a petition filed to the Code of Conduct Bureau by a civic group led by a man with previous ties to President Muhammadu Buhari.

APC’s governorship candidate in Kwara, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak had to be escorted away from a rally in Ilorin on Sunday after suspected political thugs fired bullets into the crowd leaving at least two persons seriously injured while vehicles damaged as thousands fled the scene.

The Nigerian Police Force confirmed the attack in a statement by spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, affirming that the thugs went on the rampage in Ilorin, Kwara and disrupted a rally being held by the All Progressives Congress.

“As we speak, the situation report from Kwara State Police Command was that the APC holding a Governorship campaign rally at Agbaji in Ilorin came under a sudden attack by suspected PDP thugs, who disrupted the rally, damaged five vehicles and some Keke Napep and wounded two innocent people”, police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said.

According to The Nation, there was also another attack on APC supporters in Ile Aiyelabegan, a short distance from the Agbaji homestead of the Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Rashford, De Gea and new Man U coaching sensation, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, react to Man U’s win

Rashford, De Gea and new Man U coaching sensation, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, react to Man U

Man U beat Tottenham 0-1 on Sunday night, blowing the top four face wide open, while also denying Tottenham’s Premier League title plans in the process.

A goal from Rashford after a swashbuckling pass from Paul Pogba, was enough for a Manchester United to win the match despite heavy pressure from a Tottenham team unlucky in the second half to not score against Man U.

Here are some reactions to the match from players and coaches

Rashford, De Gea and new Man U coaching sensation, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, react to Man U

Solksjaer speaking to Sky Sports after the match, said;

‘Results wise to come and beat Tottenham is fantastic held on second half, they changed the system in the second but you’re allowed to have good goalkeeper.’

‘We did really well, when you have pace and then cleverness of Paul the plan was to go quick attack with pace, the goal was fantastically taken by Marcus.’

‘We worked on it for a week, we thought it would work and we have seen them and we thought it was going to be a good plan and it’s good we have different ways of playing and we showed we are ready to compete, second half we could have scored two or three ourselves so it wasn’t that one sided. ‘

‘The goal, that’s why we put Anthony and Rash wide of Jesse, he was a link player, that plan worked today.’

Rashford, De Gea and new Man U coaching sensation, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, react to Man U

Paul Pogba, when asked what has changed under the new management said;

“I am enjoying playing football it was difficult with the system and tactics we used to play I like to be more attacking. I think my position there is when I feel the most comfortable.”

“The manager told me to get in the box and get goals because I will score if I’m in the box, Frank Lampard the one who makes those runs and scores a lot so if I can do that. ”

“That helps me I know Matic will be there and we can press high, that’s what I have been doing since the manager came I know I have security there and I have the freedom to go.’

‘That’s what we want, top four, we have to keep it up, the season is still on and we want to get back to the top which is where we belong.’

Rashford and De Gea, reacting to the match, said to Sky Sports;

Rashford: Most difficult we have had (under Solskjaer), hardest we had to work for result we put in a lot of work. We go home and prepare for the next game.

DDG: Yeah, especially because we won against a top team and we deserved to win we controlled the first half the second they had chances but we defended well and have three points.

I was feeling very well with first two saves but a great game for us and to get three points at Wembley and so we are happy.

”We’ll shut down Nigeria if FG goes ahead to arraign Onnoghen” – Militants warn

A coalition of Niger Delta militants have vowed to shut down the country if the Federal Government continues in its planned arraignment of the Chief of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onneghen.

Recall that Jutice Onnoghen, an Indigine of Cross Rivers state, has been asked to vacate his seat over his refusal to declare all his assets and is scheduled for arraignment before the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja tomorrow January 14th.

In a statement issued by General John Dukku of the Niger Delta Watchdogs and Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators today January 13th, the coalition of militants said President Buhari never wanted the appointment of Onnoghen as the CJN and are not surprised that efforts are being made to remove him from office. They argue that Onnoghen is being humilated because he is from the South South.

The militants warned all non indigenes who own oil wells in the coastal area to prepare to vacate their zone, while asking all persons from the area working in the President Buhari government to “watch” their backs.

The statement in full reads

“The General Assembly of the Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators is shocked to learn about the arraignment of the Chief Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Justice Walter Omnoghen over allegations of his false declaration of assets based on a petition written by one Mr. Dennis Aghanya of the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative.

In the first instance, President Muhammadu Buhari was not disposed to Justice Omnoghens appointment to this position which is why he refused to confirm the appointment after so many months of serving in Acting capacity. It was during the period of his sickness while in Britain that the Acting President Prof. Osinbajo confirmed the appointment. We wish to also recall that in August last year, Mr. Matthew Seiyefa of Bayelsa State who was the most senior and most qualified officer at the time was appointed to the position of Acting Director-General of the Department of State Security by Prof. Osinbajo, only to be replaced with a retired and junior officer to Mr. Seiyefa, Mr. Yusuf Magji Bichi by President Buhari as soon as he resumed duties. We hereby vehemently resist any attempt to remove CJN Walter Omnoghen from office.

These go to confirm that there is a high level of hatred, injustice, discrimination and marginalization of the Niger Delta region by the APC-led government over the past three years.

Before the 2015 elections, we can recall several events that took place in the political arena which can now be confirmed were done to discredit the government of President Goodluck Jonathan. Nationwide protests in 2012 led by top labour leaders and Civil Rights activists including the current APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, Professor Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana, and Festus Keyamo greeted the government of the day against the removal of oil subsidy and resultant increases in the pump prices of the nations petroleum products. After much persistence, government had to bow to the will of the people.

During the campaign for re-election in 2015, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan a South South indigene was attacked in Bauchi state, we also witnessed how Northerners and Yorubas embarrassed him, even those he trusted betrayed him and did everything possible to remove him because he is from a minority tribe in Niger Delta. Therefore, we want to inform Nigerians and the International Community that any attempt for President Buhari to continue in office beyond May 2019 will be resisted by all means necessary. If they succeed in rigging election and bring back Buhari, then Nigeria should prepare to exist without the Niger Delta oil, Niger Delta will not be part of Nigeria anymore. The Northerners should also prepare to leave the Niger Delta if President Buhari contiue beyond May 2019; we are prepared to strike once and for all and declare our Sovereign Niger Delta Republic.
What, however, surprises us is the fact that the same people and groups that protested against the petroleum subsidy removal and increases in prices of the petroleum products are the ones who gave President Buhari the nod to commence the subsidy removal without any record of protests. This goes to confirm without any iota of doubt, that the protests against the Jonathan administration were embarked upon basically because he is from the Niger Delta region. Similarly, protests against the Chibok Girls abduction, and complaints about widespread corruption, high prices of commodity items, etc were the order of the day. They declared that they needed change; thus, they ganged up, humiliated and betrayed Jonathan out of office and brought President Buhari to power. But today the much desired changed has metamorphosed into chains and those so called activists and civil rights protagonists are keeping mum even in the face of human rights abuses, and deployment of draconian laws reminiscent of the military era.

Today, the prices of items have increased geometrically and basic household items are no longer affordable to teeming Nigerians. Price of petrol is now N145 per litre as against N87 during Jonathans regime. A Bag of Rice now costs between N17,000 and N18,000 as against N7,000 – N8,000 during the immediate past regime.

Even though Boko Haram insurgency was prominent during Jonathans regime, it is now beyond control. We understand that Governor Shettima of Borno who was against the use of military action against the insurgents by the then Government on the pretext that innocent and harmless citizens shall be killed in the military operations, is now crying that the insurgency is beyond him. As soon as APC government came into power in 2015, Fulani Herdsmen started killings; today Fulani Herdsmen have killed uncountable number of Nigerians, burn villages, maim and rape women with impunity without any arrest or prosecution. Today the insecurity in the country has degenerated to a point where people can no longer sleep with their eyes closed, the situation is same in Borno, Yobe, Zamfara including Katsina state, the home of President Buhari. If President Buhari cannot secure his own people in Katsina State, how can he secure the whole Nigeria?

Of course, he and his fellow tribalists should remember that whatever goes round, comes around. Even the so called fight against corruption is very selective, and ridiculously those who are branding the past PDP-led government as the most corrupt are those who had been part of the government since 1999 as governors, legislators, political appointees, etc., but today they are not ashamed to blame the government of which they were an integral part, for the alleged failures and bastadization of the economy. People like former Speaker and Governor Rotimi Amaechi, now Buharis Campaign Director General and former Governor now Senator, Godswill Akpabio who had corruptly enriched themselves during their tenures have now found the APC their safe heaven.

The nations poverty index has skyrocketed, the rate of unemployment has increased. Today, Buhari is busy trying to extradite erstwhile Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke from London, while under his very nose, billions of naira are being drained fraudulently by the Aso Rock Cabal and his political appointees and key office holders across the nation. The NNPC has become a conduit pipe for siphoning the nations financial resources. But to President Buhari and the Cabal, nothing bad is happening in the governments led by the APC.the thieves are in the PDP-ruled States. Benue, Rivers and Akwa Ibom States must be constantly harassed and their accounts frozen because they are not APC. A recent case in point is the alleged corruption charge with admissible evidence leveled against Governor Ganduje of Kano State, who PMB has already declared to be the best Governor in Nigeria.

Nigeria is in a confused state as recently declared by the United States of America. APC is prepared to win the forthcoming elections by force. They have refused to campaign because they have nothing to tell the people about the past three years of their governance. Thus, they are preparing to win by any means through Vote Buying and falsification of election results through INEC and Security Agencies. We have now come to the conclusion that if Buhari returns to power the country will no longer be safe. If Nigeria will remain as one indivisible unit, it will have to survive without the Niger Delta crude oil. We call on those who ganged up, protested and humiliated Goodluck Jonathan out of office, to rise up and do same to President Muhammadu Buhari whose government is the worst in the history of governance in the country.

It is quite unfortunate that recently the Buhari-led APC government has resorted to harassment and intimidation of opposition with impunity, it is a glaring fact that the massive corruption currently going on in the APC led government has placed Nigeria as one of the worlds most corrupt country, yet Buhari is celebrating corrupt officials as long as they are APC members.

We therefore want to state categorically that if the Presidency failed to reverse it harassment against the CJN, we will have no other option than to mobilize all the Niger Delta fighters and commence serious actions that would shake the country and the whole world; we shall shut down all the oil wells in the Niger Delta. We also call on all the Northerners and Yorubas who own oil wells in the Niger Delta to prepare to vacate immediately, we also want to warn our Niger Delta brothers who are working for Buhari to watch their back and know that we are watching them and their family members, we warn them to stop campaigning for Buhari in the Niger Delta. Be warned”.

Pochettino Vs Ole ends in good note for interim manager as Man U defeat Tottenham 0-1 (As it happened)

Marcus Rashford’s awesome strike from a sleeky Paul Pogba pass on Sunday night at Wembley was the difference as Manchester United defeated Tottenham, making it 7 wins for new Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

It was a game of two halves as Manchester United’s goal came at the cusp of halftime with Man U dominating the first half while Tottenham controlled majority of the second half.

Gunnar Solksjaer, back from a warm weather training trip to Dubai, started with his trusted front three- Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial leaving out Romelu Lukaku on the bench while Tottenham coach, Mauricio Pochettino, the favorite to become next manager of Manchester United, started surprisingly with Sissoko in midfield and a front three of Harry Kane, Son and Dele Alli.

Pochettino Vs Ole ends in good note for interim manager as Man U defeat Tottenham 0-1 (As it happened)

Legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was at the stadium to watch his former charges, after reportedly inspiring the players in the training ground during the year.

Matic and Herrera stood in front of the back four and shielded Man U from the runs of Winks, Alli and Son. Whenever the Manchester United defense was broken, David De Gea, courted by Europe’s biggest teams, came to the rescue of the team.

Pochettino Vs Ole ends in good note for interim manager as Man U defeat Tottenham 0-1 (As it happened)

In the second half, Pochettino introduced Llorente and Lamela to bail out his already losing team, but time and time again, whenever the Manchester United defense was broken, De Gea, came to the rescue- with his hands, legs and whatever he could use to galvanize his leaky defense- a defense that truly needs a new commander.

Over and over again, social media has been awash with statements like ‘De Gea is so good he can save your marriage’, going by today’s performances, one in which he made 11 saves,  those social media statements are clearly an understatement.

Pochettino Vs Ole ends in good note for interim manager as Man U defeat Tottenham 0-1 (As it happened)

Harry Kane, who toiled and prodded continuously, with De Gea refusing to budge limped at the end of the match, with what could possibly be a groin or hamstring problem.

Pochettino Vs Ole ends in good note for interim manager as Man U defeat Tottenham 0-1 (As it happened)

With this win, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has eclipsed Sir Matt Busby’s record of winning his first five league games in charge by making it six on the bounce.  While it’s Tottenham’s sixth league defeat of the season.

“The Bible is clearly against same sex relationships”- Former preacher Kenny Badmus says as he reflects on his mother’s death

"The Bible is clearly against same sex relationships"- Former preacher Kenny Badmus says as he reflects on his mother

Kenny Badmus has shared an experience he had with a female Uber driver and while doing so, he reflected on his mother’s death, religion, the Bible, and his sexuality.

Kenny, who was a preacher before he came out as gay, said he was the one who converted most of his family members into the Pentecostal movement, including his mother. But when he became aware that he was gay, he knew he had no future in the church because the Bible was clearly against same sex relationships and he knew there were no two interpretations to certain doctrines in the scriptures.

He wrote:

When my mom passed, I had a request from home that we needed to make donations to her church – a Pentecostal church. In fact, I converted most of my family members into the Pentecostal movement when I was a preacher boy. Serendipitously, Aduke, my mom was one of my many converts. Unfortunately, since I became fully aware of my sexuality, I knew I had no future in the church.  I never wanted to take the liberty to interpret the Bible my own way. As a former Bible school graduate and student, I know there are no two interpretations to certain doctrines in the scriptures.

Twist it or turn it, the Bible is clearly against same sex relationships. The Bible is also clear about the relationships between women and men in the body of Christ. There’s an order and a pattern: the man first, and the woman comes after. In fact, the pronoun ‘HE’ is attributed to the unseen God. In Billy Graham’s own words, “Metaphors used to describe Him in the Bible include: King, Father, Judge, Husband, Master, and the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Chris.” It’s the way the world was when the Bible was written. We can kumbayah around it all Sunday long, the Bible was never written for our private interpretations.

He continued to narrate his experience with the female Uber driver, writing:

Ok, I digressed.

So the call came that I needed to send money to mom’s church in her memorial. I was conflicted. I knew how much Aduke loved her church. She was a Sunday School teacher. I also knew how much the church loved her back. As a single mother with so many adversities too numerous to count, the Church was my mom’s happy place. I recalled how I had baptized her so she could speak in tongues. How we both cried for joy when she started to pray in the Holy Ghost. No, we didn’t fake it. You simply open your mouth under the anointing, and the good Lord fills it with unknowable language and twangs. Even though all her problems never went away, my mom found happiness in the clapping of hands and the stomping of feet in the house of the Lord. She had it on a good promise that when she died all her troubles would be over, and that she would walk on the streets of gold. These experiences and promises provided an irreplaceable escape for her. How could one fault that! I can’t. I made up my mind that it was worth it. That it’s ok to send donation to mom’s church. People find happiness in where they find happiness. It’s our duty to protect ourselves from the toxicity of other people’s happinesses. And my hard stance against the church began to soften. (I still find religiosity quite amusing though).

It’s not my thing, but I have come to realize that the church has continued to provide a place for the weary to escape this wicked world for a minute or two. Some find this escape in other spaces, some just can’t escape and are daily confronted with the harsh realities of injustices and inequalities.

Then two days ago, my softening approach to faith and religion was tested in an Uber ride. I knew I was in for a ride when upon entering the car, I noticed that the driver had conspicuously placed a Bible on the designated passenger seat. I shrugged. I used my ass to move the Bible further away from me and pretended all was well. The driver, a beautiful black woman with a roundish face sitting under a long synthetic hair had some air around her. Her eyes ?, as seen from her rear view mirror, planted themselves on my seat as though I had just murdered a person.

“You don’t like the Bible?” She said.

Not today, Satan! I disciplined my tongue not to say a word.

“I see that you are not saved,” she slowed the vehicle down as we approached the street ahead.

No, I’m not having this conversation, Lawd! I started to fiddle with my phone hoping for a call to come in.

“Young man, I’m asking you the most important question about your life: have you accepted Jesus into your life as your personal Lord and Savior?” She leaned back as she pedaled on slowly and steadily.

I had a lot to tell her but I remembered Aduke. Perhaps, this evangelism is what gives my Uber driver some form of happiness. Perhaps not. So I held back my fury and simply said to her: how sweet of you to offer me salvation, but no thanks. I do not need saving, and I’d appreciate if you could drive more carefully.

When my Uber app prompted me to rate my driver when I got home, I wanted to give her a star instead of five. I struggled. I came to the middle ground and rated her three stars. The world could use some empathy right now, I thought.

Have a beautiful Sunday and be happy!

A truck carrying APC branded bags of rice in Ekiti state, crushed over 20 persons to death last night Saturday, January 12th. According to reports, the truck was transporting the branded rice from Abuja, and was en route the Ifaki-Iworoko road in Ado Ekiti, when the accident occurred.

The trailer caused multiple accidents on Iworoko road, as it also affected an 18-seater Toyota bus and a Toyota Corrolla car, thereby causing heavy traffic.

Eyewitnesses say the driver of the truck lost control of the wheels and rammed into the market which was close to the road in Iworoko. Many traders, who were still selling at night, were affected.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, Caleb Ikechukwu, said

“The accident actually happened at Iworoko road in Ado Ekiti just this evening and I heard that there were causalities, but I cannot give figures. I am yet to get proper briefing about it. I learnt that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of that area is now on his way to the scene. So, I cannot give you the details, until he is back to brief us” he said

The remains of the dead persons have been deposited in the morgue.
